bought a 2005 buellxb12r black with gold rims it has 8500 miles front forks and front rim were bent a slow speed accident bike came very cheap i ve already fixed the damage . was wondering what oil you guys would recommend and how much it hold any advice is appreciated this is my first buell

On the XB12 it takes 2.5 qts in the crankcase and 1 qt in the primary. I'm using Mobil 1 20/50 V Twin in both my bikes in both holes .

Royal purple from napa. Better then mobil one for bikes! Love it. My bike runs smoother then a babies turd after drinking baby oil!

Royal Purple MAX CYCLE 20W50 engine, & RP maxcycle trans

mobile 1 is great too.

i used mobile 1 full syn in my cars too then switched to RP .

most use 20w50 for engine oil for wide temp use and better cold starting, make sure it made & designed for (4 stroke) motorcycles .
and/or recommended for air cooled motorcycle engines.....
also some oil manufactures like RP recommend 20w50(maxcycle) for engine oil and 10w30(maxcycle) for the primary ,but some think thats to thin for trans, but if using other oil from another manufacture go with at least 10w40 or 20w 50 in primary and make sure it is for WET CLUTCH USE for in the primary(trans) or you could ruin your clutch very QUICK.

definitely reccomend full synthetic oil , like Royal Purple or mobile 1 , red line, ams oil.

USE the best that you can afford , same goes for the filter (oil & air)...

thanks guys appreciate it what would you recommend on oil and airfilter since it was brought up :D

any tricks to changing it i service my own vehicles a t home and have a motorcycle lift im sure its not hard but sometimes it doesnt hurt to ask

Mar67655-------- i have the Buell pro series air filters in one and the stock unit in the other and also use the Buell oil filters . I like the Buell oil filters because they are black with no print/wriiting on them and the dealer is only 15 miles away.

I did a lot of research on this subject. Amsoil ran some tests in which it scored best, mobil 1 v-twin was second, and royal purple was terrible. Given that it was amsoil saying it was best, and the fact that amsoil is not readily available, and costs more to get your hands on, I swung down to autozone and picked up mobil 1 v-twin. One thing I noticed switching from the factory fill was that shifting into first was smoother. Finding neutral was easier as well.

Can't go wrong with Amsoil 20W-50 in both holes. Be careful - don't overtighten the drain plugs! I stripped my threads in the swingarm, which thankfully my mechanic was able to repair with a Helicoil insert. Saved me a fortune!

whatever oil u choose after you do the change ride around for 10 mins then come home and check it. There are a few of us that require 2.75-3 quarts in the swingarm for some reason.

You want to be in the XXXXXXX area on the dipstick.

royal purple .20w 50 at the auto parts store is safe to use in bolth the motor and primary it said for 4 cycle motors just double checking

to answer your question = NO NO NO NO
PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT..

if you use royal purple make sure it is royal purple MAX CYCLE , it is designed for motorcycles engines and trans/primary.

DO NOT use regular Royal Purple for automobiles is not designed for motorcycle and will ruin your trans, because of the friction modifiers in it. it will also not last long enough in the engine , because of the high temps the air cooled engine makes causing VERY VERY FAST thermal breakdown..

automobile oil doesn't have all the extra chemicals additives that motorcycle engines need for things like extremes of HIGH temps, speed of internals, etc... expample=Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 contains 25% more anti-wear and anti-oxidation additives than the equivalent traditional Mobil 1 automobile oil.

therefore automobile oil can and will thermal breakdown alot quicker than MC designed oils.

every engine in cars ,trucks and street legal motorcycles is a 4 cycle type engine, meaning they have 4 strokes , the 1intake, 2compression ,
3combustion(aka powerstroke), and finally the 4exhaust stroke. but thats where the Similarities pretty much end and the need for different oil formalations for different uses,& purposes, i.e , temps, speeds, needed and not needed additives.

make sure it made & designed for (4 stroke) motorcycles .

guess i need to rephrase this

Make sure the oil you use is (and says it on the bottle)design for motorcycles, and design for a 4 cycle motorcycle engine, not a 2 cycle(2cycle/2stroke I.E like some off road dirt bikes or chainsaws weed eater type engines that use oil mixed in the gasoline) not oil for regular 4 cycle 4 stroke gas engines ..ie regular cars and trucks .

I dont mean to be an ass I just dont wont some to ruin their engines or trans, i beleive it also says this in the owners manuals and service manuals, if an emergency you can use diesel oil.If it is necessary to add oil and Harley-Davidson oil(or your MC prefered oil) is not
available, use an oil certified for diesel engines. Acceptable
diesel engine oil designations include CF-4, CG-4, CH-4 and
CI4. The preferred viscosities for the diesel engine oils, in
descending order, are 20W-50, 15W-40 and 10W-40.
otherwise use motorcycle oils.

Make sure the oils you choose is designed for MOTORCYCLES .

i figured, thank you for your responce i bought 20 50 amsoil v twin .dollar more than mobil 1 thank again

good and your welcome.
i was worried someone was going to mess up there buell ,I DONT want that to happen . have fun , and safe riding.

Nonsense, I have been running standard 2050 RP in my Buells for about 5 years and a combined total of around 40,000 miles with no issues. Transmission is as smooth as can be with RP in it.

That said, I switched to Mobil1 1550 syn this summer because you can buy it in a 5qt jug for $21 at WalMart. I like it, but I think the RP was a bit smoother in the trans.

not all auto oils have friction modifiers that will eat clutch plates but some do so be careful in what you choose.
