I love working on my Buell. I have enjoyed working on my other bikes, but none so much as my Firebolt. I am constantly doing modifications to my bike. I have always wanted to do something with the front belt guard and have been considering it and looking at all the options for some time. The stock part is lackluster, plain and kind of boring, kind of an eyesore on the bike in my opinion. There are a number of aftermarket belt gaurds available that are all worth considering. Some cost more than others. As far as I'm concerned, all of them look better than the look of the stock part.

If you're a little bit handy here is a mod you can do to your stock front belt guard that gives it that custom look and looks more interesting. The best part is it costs you nothing. Here's what I did: I removed the front belt guard from the bike and cut various holes in the belt guard. I used hole saws on a hand drill and measured and located the holes at appropriate intervals. You can opt on any variation of this design to make it your own and unique. I decided on a series of 1 1/4" holes that trace the path of the belt beneath:

...and a 2 1/4" hole right over the center of the front pulley:

After making the cuts I beveled the inner diameter edges with an Exacto knife and hand sanded them with light grit sandpaper rolled into a cylinder shape:

While I had the belt guard removed of course I wanted to clean up the surface rust as the whole idea of this mod is that the front pulley no longer hidden and is made visible. I used again light grit sandpaper to remove the surface rust:

I have always falled to understand why the part is not finished nor the metal protected with some sort of coating. I am considering what if any paint or metal protectant coating I may put on the pulley, but right now I am digging the bare metal look, although I know the rust will return very quickly. I will have to spend some more time with the rust removal because I didn't do a full and complete job of it now.

And here is how the modded front pulley gaurd looks on the bike:

Thanks. I know what you mean, man. I did it just to "play"... And I have a number I other mods - ones I have spent money on - that I am also just waiting on "having the time" to do. ;)

Thank you, Christer. That is true and part of the concept. I actually had considered drilling an array of holes of the same diameter and patern to exactly match the holes in the heel gaurd instead of the seven 1 1/4" holes, but to me that would give it too much of a "cheese grater" look, not to mention the extra work / time involved - but of course that is always a design variation anyone could employ on the idea. I chose the 2 1/4" diameter main center hole because it just exposes and shows the nut, and I chose the 1 1/4" diameter for the rest of the holes becasue it is about the same diameter to match the rear mounting feature, while adequately revealing the rest of the pully and the belt without compromising too much of the protection aspect of the guard. I think it looks sexy.

That is an awsome mod. Def considering doing something along the lines. I was thinking maybe the Peguses on there and cut it out using a dremel. Maybe gotta think about it. The only worry i have is that it would allow for more water to get around the pulley causing it to rust faster. Idk. Im new to this. What do you think?

looks good. i wil surely do some sort of variation of this as well. . until i save up for a 50-Dro cover

Thanks! Addressing the concern regarding the potential for increased rate of rusting - if I keep the pully unfinished and stay with the bare metal look, I know I am going to be pulling the guard off and cleaning the rust on some interval. A clear lacquer should help seal the metal...also considering paint of some color, or combination of colors (gold for the pully/black for the hardware?). Could also treat the pully and hardware with an anti-corrosion coating. In any case, like I say, I still need to do some more rust removal, especially in those harder-to-reach places around the pully hardware.

Decided to go with a finish on the pulley, rather than the stock bare metal that is going to rust again.

So proceeding, I removed the pulley cover, removed the pulley nut locking bracket, removed the remainder of the rust on the pulley with a stainless steel wire brush, and masked the area for painting:

I decided to go with the black on gold color scheme I was considering, so I painted the pulley nut locking bracket flat black:

Then I painted the pulley gold...here is how it looked after paint and unmasking:

Here is how the pulley looks completed after I installed the pulley nut locking bracket:

And after installing the pulley guard back on, here is how it looks all done:

To finish, the next thing I will do is add some detail to the pulley, and using flat black will paint pulley teeth shapes around the outer diameter on the face of the pulley.

Definitely doing something along these lines to mine ... This was an excellent idea that turned out looking GREAT !!... [up][up]

Doing this as soon as I get home... It's gonna happen... We gon do diss damn thang... [up]
