ODO mileage documentation?

Short story. Where would I begin looking to have my mileage certified with a new speedometer/ODO?

Long story. Some of you might have read my build thread. I've been finishing up little things like programming the speedo, setting up the gear position indicator. Now it's time to enter the correct mileage. This is a one time deal and it must be done before 100 miles. I can leave it at zero, but imagine I'll have issues with inspections and in the unlikely event I sell it down the road. If I did leave it a zero.... what would I need to do to make it legit?

I'll most likely just enter in the actual mileage from the title when I bought it 4,816. But it is cool to go through all this work rebuilding the bike and seeing all zeros....

Any thoughts?

virtually every states' dmv now has a fully operational website. the instructions you're seeking should be on there. find the site...navigate it...sure you'll find the instructions pertinent to your situation. if not the dmv contact info will be on that site. ring them up and ask.

Some states depending on the age of the bike, don't require mileage at all

Mine just has a note that the mileage has exceeded the mechanical limits, even though it's digital. Bike had 35k+ miles on it when I bought it (best guess at the time) and had a different speedo/cluster that showed 14k miles at the time of transfer. I showed it to the DMV clerk, there's only a couple of nuts and a wire harness plug to change it out, so they let it go, mileage on my title shows 14k.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the NY DMV site better like lunatic said. Don't have a home PC so it was tricky navigating on my cell phone. But I used my Google-foo. It turns out out Buellxb9rs was correct. Bikes over 10 years (in NYS) don't require mileage documentation. There is a mileage sticker I can apply for. It would require bringing my bike, and old speedometer to a certified motorcycle inspection shop. I would have to power up my old speedo to show them, show the title with mileage and could get the sticker. Then place the huge ugly sticker in a "visible" location. Ummm no thanks.

I decided just to program the ODO. I dug up the title and double checked. It was lower than I remembered... 4268. So I added in about how many miles I've rode it since the build and programmed it in. Done deal.

It was cool looking at all the zero's. But this will be better. It will alleviate any confusion down the road.

Not sure of the question.

I "guessed" on the mileage. I only rode it around the block twice on a shake down run. Then the next run was to program the speedo. So from there on it counted miles. I added on the guessed miles-3, then added the miles it counted on the ODO since.

The speedo isn't a stock unit. Its from Dakota Digital. It ships with 0 miles then it can be programmed to whatever miles you enter. It has a narrow window to adjust, it must be set within 100 miles after speedo calibration and can't be changed again. Before the speedo is calibrated it shows 148mph all the time, so ya gotta calibrate it right away or your stuck with 148 on the speedo all the time and add up miles QUICK. Once the speedo is calibrated it will operate normally for 100 miles, then the option to enter mileage is gone.
