I am new to Buell and to the concept of checking oil on a hot engine. I am planning my first oil change and wondering if I can trust the numbers in the Service Manual - 2.5 Quarts for an oil change with filter. My problem is that I am pouring cold oil into the bike and can't rely on the dipstick to tell if it's enough, not enough, or too much. The only way to tell is to run the engine for a while, but what if I run it with too little or too much oil? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

another question on oil change - anyone done it without replacing the oil filter - how much oil do you pour in in this case? Thanks!

in that case, your filter would still hold a bunch of dirty oil. If you are changing your oil, I would change the filter.

Specs in the manual are spot on.

What bike? XB's: check oil when bike is hot, on side stand (not upright).
What MacBuell said - change filter with oil. I'd go every 2500 miles.

Just for more data, I think the filter will hold 4 oz.s.
I would always change the filter with my oil change. Trust the amount recommended and you won't overfill or underfill. I use the filters from Walmart, they have the advanced media and are pretty inexpensive. I also change the oil every 2000 miles or at least every year whether I ride or not.
