Ok i know its a simple ? But i cant find the answer and dont own a manual. So im gonna do my oil . Gonna use royal purp max cycle 20w50 my question is how much oil do i need in both primary and swingarm? I think its 2.5 in the swingarm but howmuch in the primary? And what filter should i use? Think i heard someone recomend napa.

The primary takes 1 qt. and the crankcase is 2.5 qts. As far as filters i still use the Buell filter from H-D because I like the all black and the dealers only 20 miles away from me. [smirk]

Take a looksee at the vids attached to this site! pretty informative and they also give you a couple tricks to make the job easier... torque specs, oil requirements, tin foil <-don't laugh it works :)good vids...

I actually found them on Youtube first then noticed the link on the left hand side of the main page here lmao...

Yep,1 quart in primary 2.5 in swingarm/crankcase,I also use the original filter from Harley,my dealer is only 10 miles from me.[smirk]

WIX are all black too and half the cost[up]
dont own a manual
FYI: you will need to take the clutch inspection cover off to add oil back into the primary. As stupid as this sounds HD never added a fill hole to the sportster motor I guess. Good luck[up]

Thanks for the info fellas this is what i like about this site . Just used a fram and painted it black.

I thought all WIX filters were white? NAPA's are also black (and the same filter as a WIX other than maybe the color).

Be careful with the primary. It may or may not take a full qt. Overfilling it will make the shifter feel like crap. Download the manual and follow the directions EXACTLY. While you're in there it's a good time to adjust the clutch and check the primary chain tension too.[up]

I'm changing mine for the first time today. The swing arm was black, but the oil that came out of the primary was red. It is a xb12r firebolt. Is there something better to run in there? I was planning on using the same Mobile1 as I did for the crankcase. Advice?

I run mobile1 in both on my sportster, but this thing is made for racing.

Red is transmission fluid. Its perfectly normal to use Type F transmission fluid in the primary.
My XBSX has had type F trans in the primary for the last 11k miles with no issues. In fact some clutch manufacturers such as energy one specifically call for it in the instructions.
:D[up]

You can change back if you like but id make darn sure to let that primary drain before putting motorcycle oil in it. Id also change the primary again after a few miles just to make sure its flushed out good. Whats 1 qt of oil.

I'm finding out this bike has had a lot of custom work done to it. 27,000 miles. Who knows? I'm heading back to autozone... I'll give her what she's used to. Thank you Cosworth!
