Keep in mind an engine will use oil with miles. Some use more than others. Burning 1/2 to 1 qt in 3,000 miles wouldn't be considered abnormal. So just because it isn't leaking doesn't mean it isn't low.
There's nothing wrong with checking it cold, just know it should be low on the dipstick if doing so because when it heats up it will expand.
Different products will expand at different rates too, that's why they say to check it hot. It will be hot while operating, so you want it to be at the correct level at that operating temperature. This is also why they always say to check transmission fluid hot, because it can be in the acceptable cold range, but once hot it may or may not be correct(depending on what fluid you are using).
A good example of this would be my friend who changed his oil in his camaro while I was at his house this weekend, drained the oil into a pan, filled with new oil(~6 qts) then emptied the pan into the oil container. There was ~4 qts that came out of the engine. It burned 2 qts in ~5,000 miles. Slightly excessive but not abnormal. New cars do this, old cars do this. The bike is the same as well.
