oil vent seepage

I would say it is IF it's not excessive. You know what I mean? As long as it looks like oil has been wiped around the area and not spilled. It should be fine.
What does the inside of the airbox look like?
Are you experiencing any running issues?
Also, make sure your oil lever isn't too high. That will just magnify the issue.

Just did a breather reroute on mine an hour ago. Same thing on my front breather only. Not much but anything pisses me off and my grommets and breathers are new with 6K miles on them. Replaced 6 months ago. Ran the line out the back to the L rear set without the diaper. It's been raining and the humidity is high. At the first stop I noticed water drops coming out. Highly recommend doing the mod. That crap can't be good for lubrication.

Yes the reroute is the same on the 09 as the 03-07 bikes . I replace the rubber grommets that the pvc sit in every couple of years so I don't have an oily mess. You can get them at pep-boys or any auto parts store. you will have to drop front of motor a little to replace front one . They dry out after a couple of years and don't fit tight.

removed the air box base today for the first time, noticed some oil seepage around the vents on top of the rocker boxes, is this normal??? 2009 xb12r still have stock breather setup.

dave: you'll need approx. 3 feet of quality 3/8th inch ID rubber oil line....the quality stuff. you'll also need one 3/8th T. and this filter below works nicely. cheap online and in black or chrome. IMO the puke-tanks, catch cans, valves etc. completely unnecessary for a motor in sound condition with minimal blow-by. run the line from T back over and beside the trans/primary factory vent line and then down to left or right passenger peg guard area. i go to the right...personal preference. terminate line there and install the breather. DO NOT use a one-way valve type breather. T's might be tough to find. i have them here only a few $ each if you need 1.

You can find the "T" fitting at advanced auto parts. They have a variety of them at the lawnmower maintainamce section. At least the advanced in my area does.

And good advice all around from the usual suspects.

John , Is the filter necessary? 3 ft of hose, dont see any dirt backtracking up the line. Since this is just a vent. Sorry about my stupid newbie questions!!!

dave: not really but i typically add one just for a bit of bling and a nice finishing touch. you'll see re-route articles featuring puke-tanks, catch-cans, exotic plumbing, return lines, and so much more. all completely unnecessary if your motor is internally sound and rings sealing well. the internal health of your motor directly related to how much goop is inside your airbox assembly.

funny this thread should pop up... i got lazy (ok i dont really have the proper work space either) so i took my bike to the local HD shop to get my rear rocker box gasket done(they actually have a "buell guy" thats pretty good from what i hear, but ive never had the bike there...) any ways, the service writer calls me up friday and says that their buell guy noticed someone had messed with the crank case breather/pcv system and installed a remote filter and drain and that it had NO benefits whatsoever and would be a source of oil seepage and that it should be put back to stock. I nicely explained that i had done that, not for performance, but to try and keep that damn K&N under that little plastic lid a little cleaner a little longer and that i would appreciate it if they'd leave my modified breather system alone and fix my damn gasket... :mad-new: what nerve... LOL oh well

Just struck me as weird that they acted like a breather reroute was a bad thing, cant see it hurting anything!!! just kinda wondered if anyone else had heard similar things?

my local HD Dealer looks at me like im CRAZY if I ask anything Buell related! LOL!!!
Pretty much everyone looks at buell people like we're crazy it seems!!!

My local HD has been pretty cool.
I've learned to come in with my own part numbers. Last time I trusted them to look up a part number I wound up with parts that weren't compatible with my bike.
They too look at me like "that Buell guy."

Did the reroute today.. Should I plug up the holes in the base or just leave them open?

plug them dave. some guys loop an old section of the breather hose thru each hole from the top of the base plate in a horseshoe shaped affair...but i use auto body seal plugs available at any decent hardware store. get the flat top jobs and a small dab of adhesive on each one. like this.... 1111.jpg

^^^^^ always a pleasure traveling back in time with you jesse!

dave: a faulty neutral switch (behind and slightly to the front of your front drive pulley) will do odd things to these XB's including inconsistent idle. cheap part and very straight-forward to replace. and for what it's worth i had an annoying low speed hesitation and stumble on my 2009 Ulysses i could never work out of it until i installed the below that i bought used on the cheap. a race-map install or tune probably would have solved it but not in my wheel-house on this year XB.
