While riding I often hold legitimate conversations with myself in two seperate and distinct accents.

I agree that the xb12 is not a beginner bike. Its to aggressive for someone with little to no experience.

yeah they look at the spec sheet and say "hey its only got 93 hp to the ground and my buddy is on a 600 getting 100hp to the ground so I should be able to ride that as a first bike.." not knowing that that XB is making more torque at 3000 rpm than that 600 could ever make.. torque will tear a newbie a new asshole quicker than shit.. then you pack all of that into a tiny little bike with a 52" wheelbase and its like handing a baby a loaded pistol!

now the XB9 I think is a different story.. I think that could make a good first rider but not a good "school bike".. I think its too tall for a good school bike, too many things for a student to worry about while they are learning gearbox and brakes.

well like I said before.. "its possible" to use a 12 for a first bike but I would not recommend it for just anybody.. some people just cant take that as a first bike.. some people cant even be trusted on a bike, PERIOD... it just all depends

So pissed. I had an awesome response. I mean this was the shit of legend. I mean it was so great your grandkids would be talking about it around a campfire in thirty years under the light of the pale moonlight, surrounded only by the stale night air and the forces of mother nature. what I don't get though is why he POSTED it to youtube... that's the part that really tripped me out. I can understand that hes new, he doesn't really know how to ride. and yeah hes on the wrong bike to learn on ... he drops the bike for no reason and the makes the leap of logic over to.... "yeah well, I gotta post this up on youtube... show off my SKILLZ" ... it just boggles the mind... I had to share this shit with you guys.

^^ Why do you say it's the wrong bike to learn on? I mean sure - a lighter bike might be better/easier to balance, but if you keep your wrist out of the throttle, there really shouldn't be an issue. I learned on my 12r...

I posted on that subject earlier in this tread.. Some people can get away with it but the average person is overwhelmed by "full-on" motorcycles. In my experience, the average person should be on something like a NInja 250-300 maybe EX-500 type motorcycle for a year or so., let em build up some skills, drop the bike a few times, have a few close calls, a wreck or two.. then move on to something more aggressive when they have a full understanding of the danger involved and when they have the muscle memory to be able to deal with that danger. If you look at the numbers,the "rider lifespan" of guys that start out on 600s or 1000s, ifs pretty low... average being a 1-3 years..These bikes are "writing checks that the rider cant cash" in a lot of cases... most of the time, when something goes wrong at motorcycle speed, the riders reaction is pure instinct and muscle memory.. the longer hes been riding the better his reactions are going to be. The younger he was when he started the more ingrained into his nervous system it is and it sometimes certain skills can really only be learned on DIRT. The best riders Ive ever seen always started off as little kids on dirt bikes, if they actually RACED dirt bikes or even BMX that's even better! So, actually the best "first bike" is actually a 49cc 2-stroke when youre like 7-8 years old.

I think the xb's are great bike's to learn on. I learned on a 600cc suzuki inline 4 that was heavier than my buell, not as balanced and easy to maneuver at slow speeds, had a non linear power band, etc. It was fine, if you don't have enough control to not give it too much throttle then you shouldn't be riding. The buell would have been even easier to learn on since it's so easy to ride. Everyone says to get a "learner" bike, and I'm glad I didn't listen, I would have just been wasting time/money.

I've also never dropped a bike. If I thought there was a possibility of me dropping my bike I would own a complete POS because I'd be devastated if I dropped a nice bike. I almost dropped my buell one time pulling off into a gravel/sand parking lot. Front tire sank a few inches and the wheel turned while going a couple mph. I was able to catch it though.

Sure. Someone out there learned to ride on a hayabusa. And probably did just fine. He'll also tell everyone it's a great bike to learn on because he never had any trouble.


The fact is though, smaller bikes are better to learn on. Period. They are more forgiving, more safe, cheaper, and easier to learn on.

The xb12 is no exception.

I am speaking about averages.. I would NEVER put, say.... my girlfriend on a XB12S as a first bike. Not because shes my girlfriend but because I KNOW HER!.. I know how she is. Is you don't know your student real well its better to error on he side of caution and put them on a 250...

in 25 years of riding Ive dropped them, wrecked them, vaporized them and generally just fucked them up, depending on what stage of riding I was in.
