I just performed a stator/voltage reg replacement on my 04 xb12r.

today I came home from work to a charged battery..put a quart of amsoil in the primary..buttoned up the fill hold and took it out of my kitchen..

I started it up it fired right up, sounded good and sat idling for several minutes.

As I finished putting the seat on and was about to go for a test ride I hear a whirring/grinding noise coming from the primary.

Sounds to me as if something came loose?

Any ideas or advise?, Im not to exited about draining oil and cracking into my primary again.

so i found the issue

took primary off and found a broken internal piece of the primary cover by the clutch inspection plate...

WTF caused this....clutch adjusted that wrong?

I am bummed

irie: did you resolve this? there have been several posts in the past few years on this issue including causes and fixes. though fairly rare some on here have suffered this same cover failure where the clutch actuator ball ramp rides. typically can't be TIG repaired due to the aluminum pores being impregnated with oil. some replace the entire cover with new or good used, others attempt their own repairs. success rate unknown. here's a board member who will repair yours. hope that helps.

Thanks for the link. I have been reading up on how others have failed and fixed them.

My guess for mine is that it was probably stress cracked previously from dropping it and broke when my clutch was adjusted stronger than before after I opened it up and replaced the stator.

The fixes look like a good idea however I am not sure about the integrity of the rest of the cover. I think I can see some light stress cracks. I wish I had a metal shop to try it myself.

I think I am going to order a new primary cover but keep the old one on hand for sure..

More downtime and winter in Montana is coming fast...

i have a broken cover that if you were able to cut the good part out of and find a way to weld them to gether i would sell it to you. the part on mine that is broke is where the shift bolt to the cover.
