I'm looking into getting one or two cameras to mount to the bike. I was meaning to get one months ago and wish I had because of my wreck. I want to get atleast one to mount to have video proof of any future wrecks and also to get some great riding video.

Do any of you guys use one? If so which you do you have or recommend? I've been looking into the GoPro Hero HD

I have a GoPro hero wide and like it. Wouldn't mind having the new HD version.

I've never owned any of the other cameras to compare though.

I've been doing A TON of research because I cant decide myself, so I'm getting both the Contour HD 1080p(bike mounted) and also the GoPro HD(helmet mounted). I've been comparing footage as well. Here are a list of pros and cons for both.

Gopro HD

pros:

1. Uses standard SD cards, up to 32 gb
2. Waterproof, replaceable shell
3. way more accessories and mounting options.
4. Better audio than the ContourHD

cons:

1. 127 degree wide angle (that's a lot for me)
2. Lens is not rotatable or sightable

ContourHD 1080p

pros

1. Lens has a laser built in for alignment and is rotatable
2. 110 degree lens(not as wide as the Gopro, I think that's a good thing)
3. Has adjustable color settings
4. Lighter and lower profile when helmet mounted than the GoPro

cons

1. Only uses micro SD cards up to 16gb
2. Longer recording time than gopro(means more compression)

All in all, you're going to get better quality out of the GoProHD, but it's a wider angle. The battery life isn't as good, but the batteries easily changeable so you can carry a spare. I think the gopro could survive and accident better, or if it fell off your bike. If I could only get one, I think it would be the GoPro HD.

I'm kind of amazed that the lens isn't filming throught the ass of bugs, nice set up though. very good idea.

I used a different camera that didnt have a motorized lens, and just velcroed a sheet of plexiglass over the lens.

I have a hard time with the price of the GoPro, but I know I am going to buy one at some point. Plus, the people I know with them, always have trouble with them.

Go Pro HD for sure I have one for my truck, but it will be used on my bike, snorkling, and sky diving.

You can buy different levels with higher or lower resolutions. Mine is the HD Motorsports camera and in all it ran $300, but the quality is crazy.

Here is a shot from my truck you can click on the lower bar to highten the quality. 720p works the best IMO.

i have a vholdr base model and i find the video good quality but the sound is crap.it's just that horrible wind noise and i have tried several measures to channel the air away from the mic. the vholdr has a tiny air hole in the lower case area where the sound is collected but so far i have found it impossible to get any audible sound quality.I have made elaborate foam and plaster moulds to encase the mic but to no avail.i would not recommend this unit as i want to hear the bike sound not some soundtrack i have dubbed over the top.If someone has this unit and has a fix i would be glad to hear it.cheers

OK, I have much to say about this topic, but can't right now bc i have my phd qualifting exams starting in only a week...UGH! Anyway, I will mention that I recommend getting an actual full fledged HD camcorder. Some quick reasons. They take amazing quality footage, can be fitted with different lenses, very compact versions are out there, they are only about twice as much and the biggest thing...you can actually zoom and focus properly. I have an HD samsung that is slightly smaller than a soda can. I have several mounts as well. That being said, I am 100% for people shooting in general, so game on...no matter what you're capturing with.
Ill get info and mount pics up when i can.
