I've searched for info about this and couldn't find anything that answered my question? But with the open air box should I worrie about water messing up the motor if I get caught out in the rain?

I've never had a problem with mine riding or leaving her parked in the rain, I ride year round rain or shine hot or cold and never had any weather related problems. Then again I live in southern california. The rain out here is like sprinkles in north carolina (I've lived in both)

Gascap = Upside down

:p

I never had a problem, but I only got caught in the rain a couple times.

Been caught in a lot of rain storms. Paper filter would get soaked and cause running issues, switched to a k&n and haven't had any more problems.

Yeah I'm getting an K&N soon that's the next thing on the list! But ok good info nice to know I don't have anything to worrie about!

This a trick very few know about....better aero=2 mph on the top end! :D

No....if you EVER get water in the engine from it raining out....you have bigger issues to worry about!

The little rain that would make it in wont hurt it. Remember they have water meth kits for vehicles. I ride in the rain all the time.

When its to cold to ride in the rain I put my bike in the shower and rev the motor with my bathroom exhaust fan on, wouldn't want to die from carbon monoxide poisoning. O shit got to go my green peas are boiling over! :eek:

i ran into problems more than a few times in a heavy rain. switched back to the stock air box since there isnt really any gain with it open anyway.when it was open putting my hand in front of the screen took care of the water getting in there.

[up]I'm glad someone pointed this out. One of the biggest myths in motorcycling is that you somehow magically gain horsepower just by taking the air box lid off...[smirk]

This may not be true in all scenarios but on my bike when I removed the air box lid it pulled in significantly more air. This is verified from ecmspy by the afv value. It ran so lean that it ran like crap and I had to put the lid back on to get it to run good again and get the afv back close to 100.

if your bike is parked up the rain shouldn't be an issue as the in stake stack is about 2.5 inches high so water should run off around it, however if you are riding then particlized water will get sucked in to the engine.

you could duct tape the front of your air filter???

You do know that the outer airbox lid itself isn't sealed against the frame and water can seep in from all the way around it anyway as you're riding through the rain ... and since later on in the years the had stock airboxes had holes in them from the factory ... I wouldn't really worry about rain getting into the air inlet by the gas cap ... your fairing will shield almost all of the rain from getting into it while you're moving, and the angle the opening is at should prevent rain from getting in there while standing still .... some moisture getting into the engine is not that big of a deal anyway to begin with (think of what jetski or boat engines have to deal with) ... it's when you have serious amounts of water making it's way into your engine that you need to worry ... and I mean like, you ran a water hose into your intake while it was running ...

yea my 09 has the new style. you wont suck in enough to hydolok the engine but youll get enough to cause it to spit and sputter when riding in a heavy rain.

I have always wondered about the open airbox thing. I have an 04 which was originally a sealed airbox, inner and outer. I bought the newer style inner with the slots cut in it, newer style outer with the vent by the gas cap and also removed the snorkle on the left side frame. I am wondering if I am letting too much air in? Sorry, not trying to change the subject here. I dont ride in the rain unless I get caught in it on accident, so I am not sure about the original topic.
