Open Airbox Conversion from ASB

I have it. You could make your own if you are crafty. Its just a couple long bolts, washers, nuts and a plate. It does the job and looks cool if you have a translucent intake cover.

If it`s what I have it`s great get it helps alot and you can do the breather re-route while your at it

Just cut it out

what do you do with the lines that are running over the plastic cover? the ones that have the slots in the cover that is in the picture on the left?

I ran them around the edge of the bottom of the lower airbox. If you do it right you will barely be able to see that they are even there.

Completed the Open Air Box Conversion last night and I love the way it looks! Only took about an hour total and I went slow.

Haven't had a chance to ride it yet bc I did this late at night and was respectful of my neighbors.

Funny...giving the little throttle body ten times more breathing capibility thAn it can handle does exactly what..?

I need real facts...not wives tales, myths and hand me-down information.
Sound also doesn't count.

That clear one would look great.
Sorry don;t have any stats on it.
I'm sure someone will be along the way shortly.
...hopefully, cause now I"M curious too.:D
Cheers,

i think the downfall with beterbaja's is the fact that you lose the nipple that the stock and asb one has, i hear the nipple smooths and directs airflow into the throttle body.

im not sure what the exact gain is, and maybe it is overkill, but even the factory airbox covers have changed quite a bit over the years

What a stupid thing to say!?
The stock setup (especially on the latest model XB's) is like sucking through a straw. The only airflow available is the small hole above the filler cap and this is completely out of clear air, as its behind the screen. The open airbox conversion (i cut mine out of the stock inner box) provides a much smoother path and, when coupled with an ASB airbox cover, provides an awesome improvement due to less turbulant, denser air.
You dont need dyno figures; just logical thinking.

If you have the old airbox cover that doesn't have airvents in it, is this really going to do much? Either way it's still just sucking air in that tube through the left side of the frame. It could suck a little more air in through the small gap between the airbox cover and the frame, but I'm not sure how much.

Also, would this have any affect with the stock exhaust? Which is more limiting on a stock 03, the airbox or the exhaust?

and lastly, I'm assuming this is going to increase noise? I actually wish my airbox was a little quieter. Maybe without the echo of the smaller airbox it would be more grumble and less high pitched air flow echo?

I never thought about cutting up the stock cover, I'll probably look for one on ebay and see about cutting it up just to try it out.

It's really easy to create your own out of the old airbox lid just be sure not to cut the lip off of the lid as it is there to create a seal. It does affect your afv values. the mod seemed to lean out my bike which is an 04 12r. I just had to bump up my o2 sensor voltage so the ecm would richen out a bit. now it runs great but sorry don't have any dyno numbers yet. but the assometer luvs it so I'm good.

Are you talking about mine? Mine will have the airhorn in, just removed it for my first proto airbox.

I think it would be more effective on the later model bikes, as they removed the hole through the frame to increase fuel tank capacity. The later bikes just suck through the mesh above the filler cap which is, in my opinion, less than adequate. The LHS air scoop just cools the rear head on the later bikes.
Ive got a Drummer SS and the difference after the open airbox mod was like night and day. Much crisper throttle response and vastly improved power; it was a real surprise.
I'd definately cut the standard inner box though, so you retain the little nipple that directs air in the throttle body; they wouldnt have done that for nothing. Also, on the 2010, i need the keep the exhaust valve servo so the dash light doesnt come on; even though its not connected at the exhaust. Make sure you use nyloc nuts with the threaded rod as well. You dont want to ingest a nut!

Shaun.

This is how my Airbox looks with FAST Air Intake System:

And I do get a lot off attention on this setup :) It is not very common here in Norway I guess..
