saw a lot of ppl go for open airbox, so i did it to test how it feel. i like the way it looks since i have a transparent cover. and since i am making my intake sandwich-plate, may as well just put a gauge there so i can see the A/F ratio. (it's not to visible in daytime)

Looks great![up] Unfortunately the back side of the A/F gauge is disrupting air flow into the velocity stack. If you look at the stock piece you are replacing, there is a nipple that smooths the flow of air into the velocity stack which starts to help at upper RPM's. Best location while keeping it in the filter top would be between the two bolts and the edge closest to the seat, still visible and wouldn't obstruct the velocity stack.

thz guys.

@ lowkey: yup. the bottom of the gauge is kinda on top of the throttle and it will not have the velocity stack effect but i actually don't find much of a difference.I think the open airbox allows so much air going thru the filter, it should be more air than stock anyways.

@ draxsonimy: I am sure you have a narrow band AFR sensor on your 04 too, and it could be the same wire but i am not sure. I have a factory narrow band but also have an innovative LC-1 wide band ready for A/F ratio logging and ECM tunning. (later when i have time)

I've done the open air box compared to the factory semi open box both with the nipple above the velocity stack. Power wise... I'd have to say there is no power increase by opening it up, just more growl to it. Here is why, the filter size is what you would find on a 5 liter or bigger motor in a vehicle, so the filter has no restriction on the single throttle body breathing through it. This is if you have a K&N or other free flowing filter installed. It all comes down to fluid dynamics and I've come across some threads posted on this site showing a 2 horse power (on the dyno) increase by that nipple compared to the early style inner box that does not include it.
Don't get me wrong, you did some great work there! I really like the idea of incorporating a wide band that can be viewed any time like that as well as your skill in making it all come together![up]
I too bought aluminum plate and even mocked it all up to make a similar top cap setup but in the end without that nipple it would end up being for show and losing any performance gain. With only 90 -100 horse power with mods on these bikes we can't afford to lose any! Haha
