Hi,

I have been cleaning the engine in preparation for powder coating and as some gaskets were stuck I have decided to clean them with sandpaper (180) - all by hand. I used a bit of paint stripper and then flat tip screwdriver to lift the gaskets slightly and then sandpaper to clean it off. It's smooth with some scratches and marks here and there. The surface is not shiny and spotless but has lines (sandpaper marks). WIll I have to skim the surfaces or is it just superficial?

Many thanks

P.S. I will soon start posting my complete XB9SX rebuild photos with lots of custom bits done to it.

Oh.. And don't ever do that again. I use a rubber fingered disc on a small angle grinder if it's THAT BAD.

I'd be a little concerned if it was a head gasket surface but most other locations the gasket will seal just fine. Guages or burs are a different story. Light scratches no big deal in my opinion.

If it isn't anything on the cylinders I would think a thin layer of high temp silicone would do the trick

You may want to try a fine wet sand paper job , that should smooth surface some more . The high temp sealant always works . Just do not go crazy if you decide the sealant route ,thin layer is enough .
