So, I went down on her and she didn't like it. Deep lean, tire let go and down she went. :-( Anyways! It's a great excuse to do everything I have wanted to do BUT I need some info. How hot do our mufflers get? I am looking at High Temp paint that is good to 500 deg. Looking to do a black with a ghost of red in it but need to know muffler temp. Thanks guys!

I would bet the muffler gets hotter than 500 deg F. You'd probably want 1,000 deg F paint.

^ agreed. I think mine was like 1500-2000 degree BBQ paint , spray can right off the shelf at Menards. Sanded it real good and sprayed it twice. Never cracked or peeled looks pretty dang good for 5 bucks and a little hand sanding!

O also I taped up the chrome tip and made sure nothing sprayed inside too

sorry to hear that

but there is no way the muffler gets over 550. At the header sure but not the muffler. Use engine enamel, bbq paint doesnt hold up well to gasolines and oils. My friend painted his engine with it and it all started to flake off. Walmart sell rustoleum engine enamel that works great on mufflers. If you want to paint the headers or jugs themselves id go with VHT paint.

Thank you guys so much for the prompt replies. Everything was answered perfectly. I didn't think the muffler got too much hotter than 500. What I'm gonna do is spray some engine enamel black (500 deg), then ghost it with VHT anodized red (550 deg) to give it almost a burgundy color when the sun hits right, then clear it for a nice shine. All engine enamel so it'll hold up to solvents. Will absolutely have a walk through put up if all looks good and works well. Thanks again guys.

I used rustoleum grill paint on my race pipe about 3 years ago and it still looks good.

Where can you get VHT paint? I've never heard of the stuff. The ghost burgundy sounds cool as hell. Got me thinkin' there...........

Got mine at AutoZone but should be able to get at any auto part store. [up]

I used the orange engine enamel on one of mine. Was way to bright but it held up good! Took it off but any of those paints will work well.
