I'm in the process of doing some visual mods to my '08 City-X. Doing the usual rear fender chop and I'm also looking at painting or powdercoating the seat rails and passenger peg dropdowns. Any suggestions? I know powdercoating is better, but money and time (unfortunately) are a little tight. If I paint what is the prep I should follow?

Thanks in advance, I've already learned a ton from this forum.

I would go powder coating. If it was going to be anywhere that rock chips or road debris might not get to it then paint would be fine. I would always suggest powder coating though for durability.

paint them...you have a clearcoat finish that is backed @ 80°c and is almost as hard.
for the side rails, this is more than enough.

;)

If you plan on using just spray paint, i'd save the money you are going to spend on the cans and sandpaper and get my parts powder coated. I was doing the same stuff you were a couple months ago and I called around to powder coaters and found that it is fairly inexpensive. I got my tail piece and my front headlight brackets sand blasted and powdercoated for $30. Worry free for years to come.

I powder coated mine. Should last forever. Just remember to sand off the paint or pc where it attaches to the frame. If not yo will lose your ground... ask me how I know [sad]

Looks like I'm going to have it powdercoated. How did you guys keep all the threads and holes clean?

EVLXB - I saw that you had grounding problems ... I'll be sure to clean up all the contact points;)

My powdercoater put bolts in the holes that needed to be clean, but I am not sure if all will do this. If you have some extra bolts laying around start putting them in the holes.

most use rubber plugs in the holes, and heavy duty masking on the surfaces that are to be uncoated.

Either one will stand up to a beating all the quality of each depends on the PREP. Paint can outlast Powdercoat any day if the prep isnt done right or vis versa.

A friend of mine paints drag cars and he swears by paint, due to the tech. that hase been put into it and you cant beat the price.

Paint!!!

I am sorry but powdercoat will out last paint. Pro paint that is baked is alot stronger then getting some cans and going to town in your garage. I am polishing my rear sets and passenger peg drop down and then going to have them powder coated clear. there will be no maintance when they are done. Go Powder Coat!!!! Just my thought. :D
