Hey guys,

I am thinking about painting my all black Cr. I want to powder coat the frame, subframe, and swing arm a bright silver to help keep temps down externally and internally. Yes, I know it won't be a drastic change, but I have done everything else that I can think of that's a fairly simple task for the average Joe. I wrapped my headers and bought snake skins from ASB. My leg is cooler, but the bike itself stays real hot and that black paint soaks up heat rays like a sponge. I don't want to go white and silver would match any color I choose for my plastics. I've done some research and talked to some auto paint pros and they said silver will help keep temps down and will especially cool it down quicker. I'm thinking silver for the frame and swing arm and electric blue for the plastics. Black looks mean, but it doesn't stay clean worth a flip. My 09 Tacoma is electric blue and looks real sharp. I think silver and blue would be a cool custom combo that would stay clean better and keep heat temps down.

Suggestions? :)

Play around in PhotoShop (or GIMP, if you're not willing to buy PS) and you can see what it would look like with any color combo you wish.

jake: my mind's made up that I want to paint my paint to keep it somewhat cooler in the heat and also help keep it cleaner. I think the silver and blue would be a slick combo, but I'm open for some other ideas that I may have not thought of. I'd love to go silver and plumb-crazy-purple or a midnight blue on the plastics, but that'd stay just as dirty as the black.

Ranger: I've thought of hero blue. Pretty similar to my Tacoma blue. I think I'll pass on the camo lol.

polno: My buddy has been helping me out with some color schemes using PS. We came up with a cool scheme painting the frame and swing arm white. The heel guards, handlebars, under tail, and wheel hugger red. And the plastics blue and then air brushing stars on them for a Patriotic theme. That'd just be a lot of stuff going on.

Go for it. That sounds pretty interesting. I am curious to see how it will turn out, I bet it will look great.

I am a fan of the bare aluminum frames on the 1125 race bikes.

I love the polished aluminum look as well, but that's just as hard to keep clean as black, ya know? We'll see man. I'm going to keep toying around with color schemes and see what I come up with that I can afford. I don't want anything crazy; just a sharp custom looking bike.

Personally, i dig the black with hero blue accents. I think it looks pretty sick. But its hard to keep clean.

I really like white with hero blue accents as well, but thats not very "custom."

burzac: looking custom is the last thing on my list. I'm mainly going for a color combo that will POSSIBLY keep the internal and external temps down and also stay clean longer. The hero blue and black is sharp. Silver and hero blue would look sharp also I think.

xtreme: I do like the EBR race R's and that's definitely one on my list. That'd stay the cleanest for sure.

Yeah man i really like the hero blue and black. silver and hero blue could be cool too. I have a hard time envisioning it, but if you could get a good idea on PhotoShop and it looked cool i think you should go for it.

if u want to be really different and really poor... there r a few paint companies that make chrome simulation paint. i think ppg has one. it looks 99 % like real chrome. its pricey but ur doin a small area mite look kool

That'd be pretty cool Buelly! I love me some chrome. I'm about to google ppg now. The only thing is I don't want to tear my bike apart. I want to find something local so all I have to do is take my bike in, tell'm what I want, and let'm go to town. That way I could come in and check on it every other day or so and make sure it's being done properly, ya know?

where u at zdawg? im a collision painter in Neb. City, NE. Painted my own bike of course...

That looks real sharp, Buelly! I'm in Lubbock, Tx. I went to Law Brothers Cycles today and got a quote. $750 for disassembly and reassembly, around $750 for a solid color on my frame, swing arm, and sub frame, around $1k for all the plastics. I dk much about paint or what a good price. I went to Maaco first, but they said they stay away from bikes. They sent me to Law Bros who do real nice custom work, but I don't want anything fancy. Just 2 base colors with maybe some metal flake or pearl added. Do these prices sound about right?

Yeah those prices are farely compedative considering labor rates there might b a lil higher than ours and im not sure what kind of paint they use. I'd suggest doing the tear down ur self if possible its less of a pain 4 them. Unless u want graphics that have 2 match from panel to panel then they'll have to hang it all together to lay out the graphics. Also try to pic factory car colors u like and write down the paint codes if possible. it makes it easier for the painter to help u choose colors.

Sorry for the thread jack Dawg, but Buelly, we need more pics of that Uly!

Back to your reguarlly scheduled program...

Go in Monday to Maaco to get all my plastics painted with a base clear coat of Hi Blue Pearl Metallic. It's pretty similar to my 09 Tacoma blue. Law Bros Cycles will powder coat my rims the same color this winter and also powder the frame and swing arm silver metallic. I think that'll look real sharp. Even the blue and black for now ought to look real good, IMHO. They're going to pull all the Buell emblems off, of course, so there won't be any Buell markings. Law Bros is going to custom air brush Buell and 1125Cr back onto the bike with silver metallic. Probably will also send my headers off to Jethot and have them ceramic coated to match the silver since they'll be off the bike anyway. Pretty excited! And no, it shouldn't look like an R1 or anything since Yamaha blue is darker. She should look different from others.

Sounds very cool!

By the way, how did you reach the folks at JetHot? My browser goes all nuts with virus warnings about the JetHot website whenever I Google them...
