If I couldn't drive a bike back, what would be the best way to bring it home (500+ miles)?

I figured Uhual, but they charge by the mile. Looking at near a grand for the whole trip.

There has to be a cheaper way, no?

Do you have a pickup? I brought mine back in a Dodge Dakota short bed. Buells are short so they fit well in just about any truck.[up] You could also rent a trailer from Uhaul if you have something you can pull it with...

I took my 2000 chevy 3500 754 miles to buy my bike. It cost me 275 bucks in gas. Now this was when gas was 3.45 a gallon so do the math. It wouldnt be a grand. Enless its 500 each way? but even gas shouldnt be that bad.

I would drive. It was rough in the truck, but well worth it when i got the bike home.

Well I figure a grand because its 500 miles, and Uhual charges 1.79 a mile. Plus you gotta figure gas and its a heavy bill.

I might need to ask my friend for his truck. I live in the city so no car for me.

Yea Uhaul is a bad idea. I would go with a truck, the buell will fit in just fine. Bring a ramp, or if you dont have one back into a ditch and drive in. You will save alot of money.

Used my fathers Ranger also to pick up 2 of my Buells and an s-10 to pick up another.

I know this isn't a very good choice rolling 9mpg

Does your vehicle have a hitch? Uhaul has small MC trailers I think they just rent by the day. You have 24 hours to return it...
Uhaul

Any home depot or lowes near by?
I know they rent pick-ups and vans.
Not sure on cost but its another option.
And deff go with a 2wd drive if u can, the height on most 4wds makes loading and unloading a pita

i pulled my bike from dc to tx with a uhaul trailer behind my pt cruiser. it doesn't take much.

road trip with the friend with the truck.
thats just one thing you know someone is going to ask you when you own a truck! " can i borrow your truck to haul this, or can i use your truck to move this. "
it would be alot cheaper to pay your friend for wear & tear & gas & food to help you haul it back home in his truck , then to rent any uhaul ! thats what friends are for , you would help him right? then if he a good enough friend then he probably wouldnt have a problem with you borrowing the truck, or helping you haul it back.

even if your car doesn't have a hitch, you can buy one for $150, bolt it on, rent a uhaul for $20 for the day and go at it. You're still way under the budget for renting a moving truck or shipping a bike. Plus 95% of the money you invested you get to keep because the hitch will always be there and next time you need to move a bike it'll only cost you $20 for the trailer.

Thanks for the replies guys. Problem with living in Manhattan is not many people have trucks, or cars for that matter.

I do have one friend out in Long Island whose dad owns a 2009 Tundra with trailer. I will ask him.

Upthemaiden- unfortunately uhaul charges by the mile plus the 20. It would add up real quick.

if you rent a trailer , then rent as close to where you live as posible and say it is only for a local around town haul for one or two days to haul a few things.dont say where you are going then they will charge that disatance and back. dont rent it at a long distance from where you live. I rented a trailer once to haul my Mach1 home and the no one in 200 hundred miles had one so I found the closest one near my town and rented it. it was going to cost me double to rent it from where i pickup up my mach1. so i only paid for the 200 miles back home, and not the 1000+ miles for the whole trip from the uhaul place to the east coast and then back to OK.
