Picking up a bike with a truck?

Upthemaiden- unfortunately uhaul charges by the mile plus the 20. It would add up real quick.

Trucks are charged by the mile, any research I've ever done into renting a trailer always just gave me a flat fee. I even overestimated, I just checked and it says $14.95 for the smaller one. All of the truck prices say "$...... plus $.../mile" and all of the trailers are just listed at $15. I've never had to rent one so I can't say from experience but I'd definitely yell up and down until they gave me a discount for hidden charges on their website if that's the case.

Problem with Uhaul is they told me no motorcycles in their trucks due to the whole gas issue. They told me only a trailer!
yeah I know...don't tell them you're hauling a motorcycle[smirk]

go rent one of their ramp trailers, easiest way, no way to charge by the mile, lots of places to strap it down

short bed Dodge 2500, the bike made no difference in mpg's 20-22

trailer

i worked at uhaul a while back, if you do something like this you can actually get additional coverage for your cargo through uhual. as long as you make an attempt to strap in the cargo and aren't abusing the trailer, etc; they will cover ANY AND ALL damages to cargo and towing vehicle

and this coverage is an additional $7-$10

Oohh, Midnight, that might be the call right there.

It is 110 to rent a Silverado, and comes with 150 miles. Then it is only 25 cent a mile.

I just don't know if the bed would be long enough. But I guess I could rent the uhaul trailer if need be.

Or since your in NYC just wait for a box truck to triple park and jack it...

Oh wait sry this isn't GTA is it...

Only thing our buells won't fit into are the Ford Sport-trac things with the what 4ft bed.
Ur std full size truck has a min 6ft bed with a 2ft tail gate.
So you might have to leave the tail gate dwn, no biggie.
2 straps up front and 2 in the back n keep it under 100.
Have done it many times

Another option I thought of was zipcar. I am a member and can rent a Toyota Tacoma. Maybe it would fit in the bed of that?

Only way to haul them... But you have to have a trailer. Tractor Supply and Harbor Freight sell small trailers that you put together and can collapse for storage, and are really light to pull with even a small car. Buy a hitch for your ride at a junk yard off a wrecked car for $50.00. Keep them both for future use.

It would definitely fit into the bed of a tacoma, and I think an entire month of zipcar membership plus signup fees is cheaper than renting a pickup truck for the day.

I am thinking that might be the best strategy.

I am already a member. It would cost roughly 100 bucks for the day to get the truck. It comes with 180 miles, and 45 cents for each mile after. But it also comes with a gas card paid for.

Around 200 bucks.

you'll need to get a ramp or do some creative parking to have the bed level with a surface you can ride the bike off of.

you really can't do without a truck or at least a trailer. i built an angle iron ramp which worked fine for my smaller Kawasaki, think the Buell will be a tad bit too heavy!

but yip, it is worth it! beats having to phone friends or rent stuff.

Hi,

I like to be able to take my bike to different places in my Volkswagen Caddy Maxi.
It is fun to drive my bike around in different areas.

I even plan to take it to Holland this summer. App 1000 miles one-way.

I just remove the 2 seat rows in the back and it fits inside.

No gas(oil) problems for me. Trucks are rare here in Spain. And Europe in general.

And best of all;
- No parking problems with trailer. I can even take it into parking garages.
- No dirt.
- Hidden to prevent theft.

Check my ride. Take some more pictures when I mount it again.

What about those hitch mounted carriers? Saw one rated to 500 lbs. I have a 18' car trailer so I use that. Last time we moved it was in my 28' enclosed car hauler. Time before that I had to rent a 5x8 uhaul trailer. Bike fit perfect in there. My truck has a camper and didnt think about putting it in there, till I saw a couple pics where the bike looks lower than the cab. hmmm
