I have a 2004 xb12s that is pinging at 4000 rpm, once past 4000 rpm pinging is gone, I have an after market exhaust and k&n filter. This weekend I'm changing the spark plugs to oem (not sure if the ones in there are oem). Cleaning the air filter, replacing the fuel filter and checking the timing. I use nothing but 91 octane, harley synthetic oil.and I'm going to load the race map to the ecm and tps reset. Any thoughts as to if I should solve my problem? Is this just a mapping issue since it only happens at 4000 rpm?

Exactly what do you mean by pinging? Could be to lean of a fuel to air ratio at that rpm in the loaded map. I would do as your going to do, but do them one at a time. This will help diagnose the problem. If you do all the solutions at once you don't know which one actually fixed it. If you do them separately and test accordingly you can pin point the problem easier.

I'm not sure how else to explain it, sounds like small steel bearings in the exhaust can, and yes it happens when hard accelerations. I'm thinking lean as well but if it was lean through out the map I would hear pinging all the time, however since it's only at 4k on the dot makes me think it's only lean in that one spot on the map? Does that make sense? Or do I just sound like an idiot:D

^^ thats what I was getting at.
Order of execution

1. Redo map and reset TPS
2. Test to see if pinging is relieved.
(Maybe try running the gas almost out or drain it and filling up at a different station)
3. Change Spark Plugs
4. Test to see if pinging is relieved.
5. Check timing (which I dont think it is)
6. Test to see if pinging is relieved.

Hope this helps.[cool]

cool thanks for the help, also noticed some bluing of the pipes, I'm down here in tucson az where the asfault temp was 115-120° on my way to work.is that something to be concerned about. I see alot of bikes down here with blue pipes

Dont worry about the bluing. You have any pictures you can post? Thats friggin hot. Hottest I have ever been was in Iraq 152 degrees.

i will try to upload some, buellxb does not like the format from my phone, and not sure how to change it.
yeah when the airport temp is 107 degrees you add at least 10 to the temp coming off the asfault.

Ok, here is where im at. I got home and pulled the air filter and cleaned and oiled. Since I was that far into it I decided to go ahead and pull the plugs and see how they looked, there was only slight tan color on the prongs, which according to the service manual is a “good” burn and indicates equal air/fuel mixture. I went ahead and replaced the plugs and put everything back together. Next I hooked up the ecmspy for a tps reset. The lowest I could get the tps % to was .4(was at 5.9%)I went ahead and considered that zero and backed up the idle screw 2 more turns and hit the tps reset button and then set the tps% to 5.1. the idle is at 1015rpm and the lobe timing and idle was a lot smoother! Decided to take it out for a ride. Throttle response was a lot better, acceleration was a lot better. At 4000 rpm there was still pinging however a lot less noticeable, and there was still some popping on decel so still running lean. I went to load a race map from one of the fellow xbbuellers, however it looks like it’s the eeprom format. Should I just burn the eprom format to the ecm or should I just burn a fuel race map?

I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of the programming, but I know someone that does. Check out Octopus over at the Tuniversity. His link is on the right side of the page. Good luck on figuring it out.

ok. fiddled a little more this morning. the service manual said to have the bike idle between 1050 and 1150 rpm. my tps is now reading 5.6 and idle jumps around 980 to 1080 is this normal or should it hold steady?

Drop the idle to about 950-1000. Otherwise it'll surge like your seeing. And you'll even feel it when you ride, when you come to stop it will want to rev high on you and won't drop back to idle..

ok i droped the idle to where its idling at operating temp to where its hitting between 946-1023(still jumping up and down)

just contacted him hopfully he has the answer. hoping it is that i just need to load a racemap

My '06 XB9 has been pinging lately and I have the '07 race maps loaded on my ECM. I have been considering changing the timing maps back to stock, but leaving the fuel maps the way they are.

could this be a breather hose that should be connected somewhere......maybe causing my idle problem

Where does it lead to when tracing it back? Has there been a crank case breather mod done to the bike?
