possible blown motor?

[confused] Was riding my 2003 xb9r today and on the way home it started making a real loud chatter almost a knock. Also at the time of this happening it felt like i lost power. I rode for another 15 miles or so and heard a clank and when i pulled the clutch in to coast off the road the bike died. I tried to restart didnt want to with out giving it throttle. Once started there is a real loud clank and knock and wont stay running. I also noticed there is oil coming from the cover on the right side where the cam possition cable comes out. Anyone have any ideas what may have broke????

When's the last time you changed or checked your oil?

There are a ton of things that could be wrong.... Take a magnet pin and see if there is medal in the oil bag.
If so you more then likely fried your main bearings.

I did a oil change about 3 weeks ago. Had the normal fine shavings on the magnet of the drain plug.

crankshaft bearings or cams are shot?
bike is a write-off then.
quite common for '03 models.

You don't think it would be worth fixing it if that was the case.

Change the oil. If you see a lot of metal bits in it then you are probably ******.

only way to find out is tearing her apart to find the issue...

call BS on this, could happen to any year model, have owned my '03 for 7 yrs and she's got 63k+, running the original belt

Dont be scared about tearing into it. Not that big of a job. I took mine out yesterday, had it stripped down to only the cases together in a few hours, yesterday.
