So I'm looking at custom airbox covers and what not, an was wondering would it hurt anything / be beneficial to remove the top part of the airbox(the piece that the breather tube runs across) and put a custom cover on right over that so that inside the cover the air filter is exposed and to drill holes or make a custom vented airbox cover? Is this just a stupid rambling of a sleep deprived person? Someone let me know!

You can remove it.. basically an open air box now.. get a little louder noise from intake.. maybe help in power depending on mods

I have mine completely removed for my K&N and no ill effects. Really helps if you tune for it.

Here's an old thread with some info. First one that popped up when I did a google search. Didn't read through it, but this should give you some info and pictures.

An open airbox on an 1125 will net you a couple of hp on a dyno, you'll actually lose power while riding from the lack of ram air effect and pressurizing the airbox. I think it's around 80 mph or more where that makes a difference. After that point, it's more of a hindrance from turbulence in the air and causes the loss in hp.

Running it with the inner cover off will make it louder to you but no one else when you're riding it.
