Almost done with the LaserTail project, just have some finishing work to do.

Cutting the tail lense out completely leaves a big opening under your seat, so I'll have to go back and weld/solder some aluminum to close it back up. Still debating wether to paint it silver or black it out, but here's a preview.

The tail is actually two sections internally, and the LED's are dual color (Red / Amber) and dual-intensity. This allows me to also integrate the brake and turn signals into this setup.

Camera batteries were dead, so here's a crappy cell phone video until I can finish it up and take better pics.

what about braking with turnlight?

got a euro model (seperate turn/stoplight)?

The Amber over-rides the Red. As soon as power is applied, that half turns Amber whether the Red is at low (running) or high (brake).

I'll take a better video tonight and update the link.

On the Euro models, does the turn signal have to be physically separated from the brake light?

If so, I can make the tail strip as a simple all-Red running/brake light. The way the tail is chopped, there is a small lip just behind the seat latch, right where the joint is. I can mount separate turn signals on that lip very easily, They'd barely be noticable until they light up.

Cost would be the same, either way.

that is sooo cool![up] i would leave the turnsignal at it is though.. i've got kellermanns on it and i think they look good... so only running and brakelight for me..[smirk]

That looks really cool. It would be cool if you could make the tail piece flush, from the black plastic to just underneath the LED strip, following the angle of the plastic tail undertray thing with aluminum. Hard to explain my thoughts but looks great!

Making it look clean is a challenge. You have about an inch and a half that hangs down to clear the seat latch, so I've got to find a good way to blend that in.

The goal is to make it as flush as possible. I'll post more pics when the finish work is done.

hey urban,

no, it doesn't have to be physically seperated, but it can only burn when turnlights are on and nothing else.

for the undertray, i would make a complete fiberglass kit with lic. bracket incorporated.
braket would have to be reinforced with metal so it won't crack due to vibrations (big euro plates like netherlands and germany)
if you have the lic. plate fitted more at the end and pointed out (like other kits) you can easily hide that drop ;)

Yeah, I thought about going the fiberglass route.

The truth is, once you get rid of the old tail light, it's really a simple design. Someone with a small CNC could easily mill these.

Then there's minimal fabbing and no core required.

I'm actually thinking that the "lip" itself could be the license plate mounting point, as well as the turn signal location.

What are the dimensions of the Euro plate, and can you post a pic? I'll see if I can come up with something.

Cheers.

what you mean by lip?

hard putting a picture in words [smirk]

this is about the only picture i have...dimensions i would have to check, but you can look & scale on this pic.

You can see it better in this pic. This was after the initial cut. I should have angled the cut back to make a smoother transition, but I'll fix that in the finishing.

In this pic, you can see how it drops down to clear the seat latch. (Right where all the wires are sticking out)
