Purchasing Advice

Hey y'all. I had an 05 12scg last year but is gone now. I'm in the market again and came across a 2006 12ss. The gentleman selling it claims it has 22000. he bought in off of a friend for 2500 and put 600 into (new intake seals, O2 sensor, new coil, plugs and battery). Has a custom straight pipe on it which he says has baffles in it but no tune....

The exhaust was done by his friend who was the previous and first owner. I'm a little iffy on it with the amount of the miles and exhaust with no tune. He's asking 3900. The bike looks to be in great shape otherwise. What do y'all think?

That bike isn't too far from me, I keep seeing it on Craigslist... Find out more about what he means by straight pipes and get pictures, he might just mean he took the muffler off and it just dumps where the headers end now

I talked to him on the phone and he sent me more pictures. From what I can tell, it looks like a straight pipe was attached onto the collector and runs the bottom of the bike. I don't know how to post pictures through my text messages or else I would post them.

Don't overthink the whole 'straight-pipe' issue. IF you like the bike, (colors, mileage, etc.), then go for it. It isn't priced out of line in any way. I know....EVERYONE bought THEIRS for $1200 or less....
IF I were buying, I'd shoot him an offer of say $3300 and bargain from there. I wouldn't expect to GET it for that, but $3400 should be fair. Obviously none of us can see it from these pics, but as long as it was cared for even reasonably, you should be OK. Then pick up a nice used 'race' pipe or whatever you like.

$3900 is fair. I sell xb12 for $4k+. If you don't buy it, someone else will. People can ship that and still beat local prices in some areas.

$4500 bike priced reasonably at $3900.

I saw it too, how many others you think saw it?

This is a simple buy or don't buy....
If you have the money and don't want to waste the guys time go there with cash in hand..... Look at the bike and decided if you want to buy it.......
You can get all of the advise on the planet... But at the end of the day YOU are paying for it...... And all you will hear is cricket........ when YOU have to pay to have things repaired.....

But I will give you a simple bit of advice....

So split the difference $3100/$3900=$3500

The strait pipe has been on there for a minute.... That's why the O2 and plugs had to be replaced.... Bike is running fat (rich)
I have no idea why he would replace the coil..... And the battery.... Well that's a battery....

^I imagine the bike started showing misfires with the fouled plugs and fat o2, first thing most people do is start throwing parts at it hoping it will do the trick.

Perhaps....bottom line...it didn't 'hurt' anything. I've been running around for the last 3 seasons (OVER 30K miles) with a Jardine that has to have no packing left.......essentially a straight pipe. IDK. BUT! Unless it IS a 'professional' looking job, (And it just MAY be), I would get something that belongs on it.

As long as you're comfortable with the work he had done on it. The exhaust can be scrapped for a Drummer, Dean Adams, etc. The fact that it is not tuned sounds good, to me, simply because nobody has tapped into the ECM and messed with it.

As far as the mileage goes, my '06 12S has ~27k on it and it runs beautifully. In fact, I think it runs better now, than it did when I bought the bike. I would definitely take someone on the forum (and in your area) up on seeing it. It is true though; everyone thinks their bike is work at least $235,938.96, but the fact of the matter is that this bike has had third party work done, as well as previous owner(s) work done on it.

That being said, you may buy it and find a few "inconveniences" with the work done, or things you just don't like. So, don't be afraid to shoot lower to have a little cash after to make any repairs, changes, or maintenance.

You are going to be riding it. It is totally normal to get unsure once you think you've made a decision, but YOU are the only one who can decide and who will be responsible for it. If you feel really uncomfortable with the bike, it isn't for you. If you think it is worth your while, buy the bike.

Owning a Buell isn't like owning anything else. Our bikes (in general) are not the horsepower kings. They are not the latest, greatest fad. What our bikes do have is a ton of character and personality. I have a son that buys cars, drives them a month or so and then turns around and sells them. He considers his self a car nut. I told him he is not even close. Nothing that he has owned made him loyal to a certain car. He is fad buying. It's really about finding something that speaks to your inner self, no matter what anybody else likes and being happy. Making it your own. If that is the case then price is relative. We are a different breed for sure. Think EBR got the motto right, "Fiercely Independent". If you like it and it's in your price range, buy it. If not, look on. These bikes are easily customizable as evident from the forums members bikes. Gear up, ride safe and have fun. Just my .02.

If it is what you want, and a price you can pay, go for it.

Look at my thread about buying my bike. 80% of people said to back out, but went through with it anyways. Had a little trouble, made some friends and enemies, now I have a bike that I feel is dependable, fun, and exactly how I want it, all for a price that is less than the PERFECT bike out there that I would still have to modify to be what I want.

my choices were an '06 Monster and an '03 Ligthning...2 mile test ride, $5500, had 2500 miles on the clock when I bought it. creeping up on 9 yrs ago when this all happened, and 69k+ later still have that grin on my face guess what bike came home with me that day?

I really appreciate everyones insight! Found a lesser mileage xb12s that is much closer to me. Hopefully going to be bring it home this weekend. Pretty excited!
