I'm doing the last bit of work on my cheese grater chop. I've primed it with rustoleum primer and layed down 2 thin coats of black gloss protective enamel I plan on doing one more coat of enamel, but I am wondering if the paint can be buffed to help remove imperfections (orange peel in particular)

thought it might also be nice to list any other tips for painting with everyone's favorite paint the rattle can

Wet sanding between coats will help the gloss. Also, a few wet sanded clear coats would add to it. Yes it can be buffed with scratch remover and polished with wet shine polish and it will be so shiny it will hurt to look at it.

Awesome dave! thanks for the info... next question it a pain in the rear to take the side rails off? If no what all is involved?

also... Rustoleum paint for plastics anyone ever used?

I used krylon fusion for my Airbox. It's made for plastics and so far has stood up well.

the airbox looks great, did you clear or sand and buff it? i have been trying to come up with the $$$ for black dupont base/clear for my wheel since powder it to much for me now,i tested black rustoleum and it seems strong,i am looking for the special wheel paint but cant find it in gloss black,it has worked great on a few cars. so far i spayed alot of plastic and steel parts with rust o textured paint..it looks great has a oem look and is tough.spraying the motor side covers next.

I wanted to clear it but it was summertime, and I was impatient and couldn't find it around me. So I just sanded and buffed.

I'll probably attempt a different paint job this year. (I just can't leave it alone, my new obsession)

I haven't used it myself, but Randy Hawk suggested for me to try "wheel paint." I suppose it's more chip resistant than other rattle cans? I think this is what he specifically suggested?

Duplicolor Wheel Paint

I used Rustoleum rattle can paint on mine and I'm not too impressed. It seems soft and can easily chip or scratch when taking the seat off! [mad] I might look into repainting it with the wheel paint this winter???

TIP!!

If you are worried about your clear coat chipping (it will because when it completely cures it is hard & brittle) get some flex additive. it is designed for clear coating over plastic or fiberglass. the base coat is flexible enough that it does not require this. the clear will completely cure however it will still be flexible and will even resist small stone chips. I did a custom paint job on a Harley for a buddy and he got hit w/ a stone (lawn mower). he called me, brought it over & less than 5 min. with the buffer and it was gone ;)

on plastics i usually use urethane base paints with clear.it will flex all you want and repair /buff out easy. for small parts and rims i try spray cans. i also had good luck with the transpartent aniodized paints,it great on bare meatle and aluminim, nuts and bolts,i even did a polished exhaust..its been on for 7 years ,i faded it from blue to purple to bare aluminum and cleared it.

i would not,you should only wet sand with 1500 grit or 200o,if you do get compound on it it is paintable, just clean it good with degreser.
i just painted my rear shock spring with rustolum plastic pait..worked very well. the wheels with dupli-color wheel paint and clear.and the motor side cases with rustolum texture paint all came out good. now the frame and plastics dupont chrma base/clear..no spay bombs here.
