My rear light is working but it does not do anything when either the hand brake or the foot brake is applied. Any suggestions as to what to check? Bulb? Thank you.

There are two light elements in one bulb. Check the bulb and if one element is bad replace whole bulb.

The bulb has two filaments in it and it sounds like the tail light filament is ok but the brake light filament is burned out. Pull the bulb and see if one filament has disappeared or test it with a continuity tester. A multimeter on ohms scale will go from OL or infinity to some 2 or 3 digit number if its good. Put one probe on the outside of the bulb and the other on one of the tits on the bottom to test and then do the other one. If the bulb is ok post up here again and I'll suggest some other things to check...

do you have a simple 99cent harbor freight test light? if so while the bulb is removed get a pal to assist and do this:
1-ignition switch to on...red run switch to off....test light grounded.
2-put test light probe into socket and DO NOT touch the probe to the socket base or sides....you are looking to touch just 1 of the raised inner nibs. doing this you'll find that ONLY 1 will illuminate your test light. that 1 is the tail light nib.
3-now touch your test light to the OTHER nib. hold it on their and have friend depress REAR brake pedal. light should illuminate. does it? faulty bulb. does it NOT? faulty rear brake light switch or wiring plug or socket

Does the horn work? Check the brake lite circuit and all plugs in this circuit. Also check Brake/Horn fuse. There is electric scheme in the service manual. If the plugs and fuse are OK use multimeter to check brake light circuit continuity and to check brake switches.
