Hello,

Just bought a 2005 XB12S with 4K miles. I noticed the rear rim is starting to chip. Can you strip off the paint and polish the rim? Rims are powdercoated right? Or take a loss and buy a new one? This forum is great by the way. It made up my mind to park my Softail and have fun riding again. Thanks.

I used an industrial strength paint stripper to do that same thing. Worked like a champ. I did have to get the Dremel out to get into the hard to get at spots to get all of the Powder Coat off. I left a tooled look on my wheel, mostly because I didn't have the time to polish it. Fairly easy project though.

keep the spokes & center of the rim powdercoated and just polish the outsides.
less work and nice finish ;)

Maybe a dumb question but, How do you strip the powdercoat off the outside of the rim and get a clean line(Powdercoat next to striped/polish)? And how would you polish it? I think I explained it right. Sorry, not a paint guy but I'm willing to try. Could look sweet though. :p

There is plenty of aluminum polish you can buy pretty much anywhere. Just dismount your wheels and tires (if you want) and use aircraft paint stripper that you can buy at any conglomerate auto store. I don't know if stripper hurts rubber tires, but I would take the chance I hate the down time of dismounting and remounting tires.:D

actually, i don't know...seen it alot and like the looks. better then completely polished wheels, which i don't like.

i would thing go along the line with a knife [confused]

polish...i use belgom, like myself...one of many great belgian products :p

mask off where you want your line and work carefully along it with a q-tip or something like it. The stripper will eat the masking tape so you need the q-tip but the mask will help keep it clean.
