Hey guys, soon-to-be newb to Buells in a few days, but not a newb to riding. I should be picking up my new 2009 XB12Scg in a few days and was wondering about the reliability of these bikes.

When I go to finalize paper work and pick up the bike (hopefully later this week), they offered for me to add $1000 to the bill for an added 3 year warranty on top of the 2 year warranty which comes with the bike. I've noticed some people have owned Buell's with over 30k, 40k and even 50k miles on them without any issues (other than normal wear and tear).

With that being said, would you guys recommend paying the extra $1000 for a total of a 5-year warranty or is it most definitely unneeded? I think the 2-year should be fine because from everything I've read the Thunderstorm engine has been out long enough to not have to worry about anything major happening.

What are everyone's thoughts/comments?

Any advice is much appreciated in advance. :)

Buells are pretty reliable in my experience, but given that HD promised to honor the warranty even though the line is discontinued, I would go for it. 5 years from now, who knows how expensive or how hard/easy it will be to find replacements parts etc. if anything does break.

Plus, with the cheap prices on Buells right now you could probably take the warranty and still come out paying less than you would have a few months ago.

That's just my two cents though!

I went for the warranty only because Buell is shut down. Otherwise, I'd have stuck with the 2 years. It cost a little more but given the circumstances, I figured it is worthy it.

Yea - same issue here. Been riding for 30 years, picking up my first Buell (which I have been lusting over for a few years now) in a week or so. What makes my purchase a little different is that I am US Air Force, stationed overseas - and my father is picking up the bike and storing it for 18 months until I get back. Long story - Military sales blew through their supplies before I knew this was happening - so the only one I could find was in Fremont, CA. Anyway - so it will be relatively unused until there is only 6 months left on the factory warranty. I am thinking I need to chunk down the $1K so I have 3 years left when I get back. Whatcha think?

Rinky, I haven't checked with my dealer yet (I should be closing the deal with the new XB12Scg this Saturday hopefully), but my brother just got an 1125CR and he was saying they offered him UP TO a 5-year extended warranty on top of the 2 that come with these bikes. For the 2 year+a 5 year warranty it was $1400.

So: $1000 for an extra 3 years, and $1400 for an extra 5. Mid as well ask your dealer about it, but I'd consider going for the 5 man.

If I were you I'd wait till your two years are almost up then consider if you want/need it. Because who knows if you'll still have the bike then.
That said...
Get the 5 year 1400 dollar one if you really plan on keeping this bike and you really beat on it. I'm getting this next summer when my 2 years are up because frankly, I really beat this thing and it spends a lot of time near the rev limiter. Ive already gone thru a couple grand in warranty work and its totally worth it.

You wouldn't have to if you had a pipe that actually has torque. Also, Chris told me you said "I ride it like it owes me money". That's pretty hilarious.

Dave the pipe had backpressure (while it was on lol) how do you think I got 5 mins ahead of all you guys ;) And for what I'm paying for it, it owes me my money back!

I've beat the s&it outta my 04xb12s since day one and haven't had any probs. Other then a broken clutch cable. Over 20 k on it!
