i have noticed a trend when im starting my bike . . . my clocks keeps reseting and my gauges do the swoop thing . . . happens as soon as i hit the start button

any ideas?

hey climber, did you have this problem before the swap? maybe a wire has been mounted where it does not belong. as far as the gauges needle movement, mine do the same thing every now and then,my gsxr1000 did it to,but i don't have the clock issue, could be a question for lefox or bpg.

Everytime I turn the ignition on my bike, the gauges max out then go back down to zero. I thought this was normal. What does this mean?

Same here, i thought it was normal until reading this so I figured I'd just make sure.

mine does the needle thing when i turn the key to the on position then once i hit the ignition button it does it again and resets the clock . . could this be a battery issue? cause my lights and everyhting get really dim when it happens . . . note that this happens everynow and then not on every start sometimes it starts up just fine

o hey ryhno yea it did it before the swap too i didnt pay to much attention but i dont like problems and i dont think everyhting is okay

Def. check battery. Maybe check your grounds to your frame, battery, etc. too. In order for your clock to be resetting, it'd have to completely lose ALL power momentarily.

i dont see why it would lose power cause now that i think about it all my lights on my bike including gauges do completely turn off then blink back on

Yeah, you're losing ALL power. I just pulled the negative cable off my batt. and put it back on....reset my clock and trip odometers. I'd voltmeter the battery, but I'm afraid it might be in you're ignition switch.

My truck was a stolen rebuilt, they offered to put in a new ignition assbly. but it was too high, so they did a pretty good job with the damaged one. If I pull out on the key when turning the truck over, it still starts, but I lose power to my radio & gauges momentarily. Hope that's not it in you're case though.

hmm the ignition huh never thought about that cause i know all my grounds are good im not worried about them . . . any way to trouble shoot the ignition idea?

Not sure. You got a Buell parts catalog or something to show an exploded view? If not, I'd probably start by just checking the wires and maybe the connectors (if you can get to them) that come out from the ignition switch. Try to trace the wires if nothing else and make sure they're not halfway rubbed in two somewhere. I know the service manual download on here has a decent wiring schematic. Hopefully it's something simple.

i dont have a catalog but i know who does BPG come to my rescue

thanks for your hlp steven ill check into it

Having said all that, it might not be you're ignition switch. [smirk] But honestly, it does sound like it. Since it's "erratic", I would check the simplist things first, battery & you're wires. Seems like a wire is almost cut in two and is sometimes "making" & sometimes "breaking". Good luck.

I have the same issue with the clock and trip being reset when starting up. I have also noticed that the starter nearly dies out on the first turn when this reset happens. It only started when the weather turned cold in the mornings. I figure it is the battery not having the amps to start up on the first turn so I am planning to pick up a new battery in the spring. Post back here if you figure out that it is something else since we are having the exact same issues. Oh BTW, my gauges have done the sweep when I turn the key to the ON position since when I first got the bike, so I figure that is normal.

One more thing, and this should be helpful if it works for you as well. I found a way to start the bike without it resetting the clock and time. It is a temporary measure to fix the problem for now. If you hit the starter button once or twice without holding it down, only enough to hear the starter begin to whine, then hold it down to start up the bike it should start without resetting. This method works on my bike at least. In my view it is putting a charge into the magneto, then the full battery power kicks in and this is enough to start the motor without it fully drawing on the battery and cutting power to the gauges.

that is exactly what my bike is doing . . . the whole starter dying out . . . must be the battery then

thanks a bunch ill get one when i ride alot more often

thx everyone
