Replacement oil dipstick options

Umm... my oil dipstick fell from a cart about 3' high and snapped the dipstick portion of the oil plug off. Does anyone know if there's a domestic source for something a bit more durable, like the ones that Speed-of-Color.de sells?
 
I drilled a hole in my cap, and stuck a thermometer through it. Then sanded and added small o-rings to mark the "add" and "full" line to match the stock broken stick.

A wood bit works perfectly to inset the thermometers head.

$1.99 win;)

Hmmm, that reminds me. I've been meaning to safety wire it for about 4 years now.

I second the advice on the thermometer mod. Did that to my last Lightning. Nice to be able to see your oil temp.
 
Haha yeah, that's great! The oil temperature is pretty important for knowing when you can start leaning into the engine, so definitely a good thing to have a gauge for.

I called Banke Performance and got a response from them about their oil dipstick: it is only for pre-'08 XB models, unfortunately.
 
well known truth, Joe. i typically use 80W90 gearlube as the engine lubricant of choice in all my Buells and XR1200's. they consume less oil and when you combine that improvement, along with the shorter dip-tube, over the life-span of the engine the tidy savings can be quite substantial. additionally, i also save fuel money by quickly bringing my motor up to proper operating oil temp before "leaning into it". my Pakistani XL1200 owners manual recommends the following procedure:

 
So I'm still screwed. I can get a nice aluminum unit from Speed-of-Color in Germany, but it'll cost about $150. Ugh... sounds like another fabrication job for me!

Can I add, $5ish worth of 2 part urethane or epoxy from the auto parts store would likely fix it right up too...

Give us a break. If he had to redesign the dipstick he'd have to model the entire swingarm like Buell did and run it through Cosmos or whatever CAD simulation software was used to correctly determine proper oil level - that is a full blown mechanical engineering team effort that takes months. The reason he would avoid re-engineering the dipstick assembly is because it has already been engineered and is a proven design and we'd rather be riding than repairing our junk, right? He probably doesnt have much experience with this, but I'm sure he has good friends who do so will inquire with them in January when he returns to work.

I thought about epoxying it back together, but my last several attempts have me questioning my composites repair abilities. Last I checked I wasn't able to find the stock dipstick from any of the HD sites (Newcastle, Surdyke, St. Paul), but if anyone has the part number for it I'd appreciate it. I don't see any part numbers on the remnants of mine.

Looking a bit closer at it, it does seem that drilling a hole into it to mount a temp probe or something would work pretty well. Thanks for pointing that out, Cooter.
