I'm replacing my handle bars and need to take off the handgrips. How do I replace them do I have to cut them off can I reuse them? If so how would I get them off and back on?

If the glue is exceptionally good and the grips are stuck, try this.

Otherwise, compressed air works well, use a pointed rubber tip on the air nozzle. They should be glued back on though, they'll rotate/slip if you don't.

When I switched my bars I upgraded the grips too so I opted to cut the old ones off. A single slice and the old ones will just peel right off with a little bit of work.

if you have the time, the skills and the motivation go with heated replacement grips. easy to wire up on a buell and make cold weather riding quite enjoyable. IMO

BTW... if you don't have a compressor, you can use the canned air that people use to clean computers/electronics. Just slide the narrow hose tip under the grip, then squeeze the grip to seal it and inflate the grip.

When reinstalling, I've used dish soap as well as hairspray. It slides on, lets you adjust them as needed... then dries to be sticky. Soap takes over night, hairspray takes less than 1hr, more than a few minutes. Also used Brake cleaner on bicycle grips... almost instantly dries.

Personally, I've never had to re-use them... though I could've. I waited till they were worn out to swap bars, or was upgrading grips from OEM anyways so i never HAD to save them.

If you have the factory grips I would cut them off 'cause they suck! Great time to get good ones. I replaced mine with Renthals. They are high quality, last long and have great grip. I use the ole ladies hair spray for grip glue and its always worked for me, been doing that for 35 years!

go with heated replacement grips.

I used to think that heated grips were an unnecessary luxury, but since I installed my first pair a couple of years ago, I will never be without them again. They make year round riding possible even up here in Canada!
