Some people were able to get the rotor off without a puller. I was one of the few who needed a puller. find one that comes with M8 bolts so it can bolt right onto the bolts that hold the sprang clutch to the rotor,
Just the rotor mod, I couldn't find the low heat kick. Sounds like the rotor mod is the fix along with a rewind. My bike is at the shop but they haven't done this before and are taking forever!
I'll probably do this before I take my CR in for valves around 22,000miles. So far I have lucked out on my stator, I have about 13,500 miles on it and only problems are the charging harness relay blew at 14,000 and 18,650 miles. Simple fix tho at $9.25 per relay.
I did an all-day MSF course today with lots of idling, high engine temps, and low-speed, low-rpm riding. Not even a hiccup from the charging system. That feels pretty damn good!
My previous stator looked like a charcoal briquette when I did the swap.
So the dealership is hesitant about using a gear puller that isn't specifically made for that rotor. Kind of pisses me off that they are being pansies.
Well they already have it and i'm not the most technically savvy person when it comes to fixing stuff. I'll give them a shot at it and see what happens. They are just really hesitant because they haven't done it before
Well, if it makes the tech feel more at ease, you could tell them that there is almost nothing they could do with the gear puller that would hurt anything (especially since you really only need to save the sprag clutch, and its most sensitive bits are on the back --- and completely protected from the tool).
My rotor came off so easily after I put the heat gun on the shaft for a few minutes that I may not have even NEEDED a gear puller. But I you might want to try the gear puller without heat... because I had to wait quite a while for the rotor to cool down enough to actually handle it barehanded.
