Safely run open headers?

Yes, just don't do it for long. But why would you do that? It absolutely kills all your torque.

Putting the jardine on already did that. I want to run open headers for good not just temporary. With proper tuning will it be safe?

No it is not possible you will burn up valves and you have to have a certain amount of pipe length on there to control the exhaust waves and pulse. not only would you blow it up but it would run like crap until it popped!

hmm.... get your headers chromed, and then just draw a chrome pipe onto your flat black exhaust, it'll look just like it.

I put new plugs in it and will see how long it takes to foul them....it sounds alot better in person, and it really confuses the hell out of gixxers at stop lights...

I have taken my bike for a couple short rides open header. IDK what you all are talking about losing torque.. the front end was still very light and without much throttle. Top end was gone though. I never rev'd the engine higher than 4.5k because I know its not healthy for the motor.

If you revved your engine till it hits the limiter, you'd realize you have no low end torque and only top end. You can't have plenty of torque because you have no exhaust pipe to create back pressure.

Backpressure = torque

This is an openended question.

What do you mean "safe"?

And don't worry about the myth comment about burning valves. As long as the ECM has been reprogrammed to suit the open header...the fueling will be fine (IF done right).

BUT what the others say about power loss...THAT'S true.

I personally love the sound of my bike without the muffler. Safe as in no engine damage done

I'm actually working on a pipe extension, it's not safe because with the header pipe alone cold air gets the head causing burn valves. If you make extend the header down and do a straight pipe rather than a muffler you'd be fine. The trick to building your pipe is tapering down to a smaller dimension, then back up so you get a LITTLE bit of back pressure. Wide open header/exhaust pipe at 2 inches the whole way back would leave you no back pressure at all.

Why couldn't you install a power cone in the middle of the extension or something like that would be easy to do.

hmmm i can have this done pretty easily.... so maybe a piece of pipe 2" with a section in the middle that is only 1"? also how would I tune the bike with ECMspy? ive never used it other then a TPS reset
