Hey, season is creepin up (live in ny) and I have taken my bike out a few times while there was still salt on the roads. I fully understand the principles of Galvanic corrosion, and salt's catalysis affects on the process, but from an empirical stance, how bad is the salt really, and why? Does anyone have particularly unpleasant experiences with salt on their XB, or know of any vulnerable parts that are prone to damage?

it stains, i creeps between everything and on moving parts (f.i. bearing) causes additional wear.

best you rinse your bike after riding in those conditions.

I have been out in the salt 3-4 times this winter.. I have washed it the best I can but I know its not good enough lol. My love of riding had overcome my fear of salt.

Salt can be really nasty. If you have ever seen a boat engine that wasnt lifted out of the water and left there for a couple days in saltwater, there will already be some corrosion, leave it for longer and you better start saving for a new prop. Now this is obviously a bit more extreme than riding on a salted road, but you get the point. Always rinse your bike when you have ridden on a salted road or been to the ocean with it. Your bike will thank you down the road.

I live in MI and all you really need to worry about is washing it a bit more often rather than just when it gets dirty. Yeah in the long run it beats on the bike but if you do your regular maint. all of those items will have been replaced or cleaned anyway.
