Anyone ever use a heat gun to re-mold the seat base? Mine is rubbing on one side of the airbox cover and I was thinking of trying to re-form it for clearance.

Left side rubbing...

Right side no rubbing...

I know, it's not bad but it still bugs me and it'll only get worse over time.

so, are you worried about your seat touching the airbox? a couple of times i have taken my seat rails off, when i re-assembled, my seat was a little whacked. i bearly losened the 2 bolts (2 on each side) on each side where the seat rails bolt on to the frame, put the seat on & kinda raised or lowered them a little bt grabbing the under tray. then tightened the lower bolt when i got it where i wanted it, removed the seat a tightened the top bolts. it's not a whole of play but give it a try.

^Interesting...I should mention if I push down on the front left corner, closest to the airbox, it's a perfect gap and matches the right side. I'm tempted to try re-molding that left front corner this weekend, but I'll investigate your suggestion first Joel

I just noticed the seat on my firebolt has two rub spots at the point where it meets the hex bolts on the front of the tailpiece,I may try Joel's idea also,I saw it after I did the rocker covers and went to put everything back on,so it has been doing this for a while,it did this my select seat so I am not happy.[mad]

So, as promised pics. I heated the left front corner slowly with the heat gun on low (being careful to aim AWAY from the vinyl at all times, it takes no time at all to burn through at the staples) keeping pressure on the area being heated by holding the seat between my knees in the direction as shown. Heat and test-fit, repeat if necessary. Lay a wet rag or towel over the area as a heatsink once you're satisfied with the fit.

Fit after re-molding, almost flush & no more rubbing on the outside of the airbox cover

nicely done, heat guns a wonderful things, im still workin on my airbox with a heat gun, takes some time but much more accurate results than a torch. two thumbs and a rep point up for a great job sparky[up][up]

Using a heat gun is definitely a more thorough remolding than my method, but I thought I'd share anyways. This works in a pinch if you don't have access to a heat gun:

Go ride really hard, till your buns are nice and toasty :p. Then pop the seat off and squeeze the corners in. It's definitely much softer than when it's cold. After a couple minutes of holding the corners in and it had cooled a bit, I popped it back for a much better fit.

Update on the "no heat gun" method: Doesn't last as long. It's been a couple weeks and it's needing to be "remolded" again.

Heat gun here I come! :p
