ryan: they can be annoying on the firebolt if stripped. the insert is called a riv-nut. see link below. most all the popular hardware online outfits like gardner-westcott , car-pak and the link below have them. it must be drilled out and replaced if threads are stripped. i have tig welded a bad one to the adjoining aluminum structure and re-tapped in the past but in all honesty it's more work than drilling out and replacing.
Thanks lunaticfringe so basically make the hole in the frame a little bigger and go up a size in external diameter of the rev-nut to fix it? Sounds simple enough and about how I imagined it would go. Time to break out my stepped drill bit.
yes sir, my pleasure. when drilling it out you often times lightly wound the mounting area hole. if so it's not a big deal as i mix up and add a dab of epoxy like jb weld to the new riv-nut and insert it. let it set up at least 24 hours and keep the epoxy out of the riv-nut threads. works like a charm.
Picked some up at fastenal here in Elizabeth city. They only sold them in packs of 10. I wasn't sure which ones I would need so I ordered the 5/16-18 and the 3/8-16 rivnuts. I will surely have extras so if anyone needs any, shoot me a PM and we can work something out.
