Hello,

I'm searching to buy a second hand (around 6000 miles) XB9R. I was wondering if there isn't some sort of (check)list telling me what to look for when I decide to go and see one.

Greetings
david

Don't get a 2003. Look for 2004 and up. There are reasons the '03 can be found for so cheap. A 2006 and up model is even more improved. I think look for the obvious stuff; oil leaks, damage. Anybody else?

tire tread, if it rides straight, constantly misfiring any electrical problems, broken clutch cable at the primary, shifting, etc. good luck

a few things that I do when looking at a used bike regardless of maker...

1. possibly the most important.... if you can get a swing arm lift.... pick up the rear wheel and shake it side to side.... I've seen way too many people try to pawn off a bike that is desperately needing new wheel bearings.. If you can... do the same with the front wheel too.
2. If you see any indication that the bike has been down... it's been down... I don't care how honest that liar seems to be when he tells you the bikes never been down.. a bike that's hit the ground isn't necessarily a bad buy... but you should be able to haggle for a better price if it has.. I would also take it toa reputable shop or dealership to have them check the frame out and make sure it's not torqued out of shape..
3. In your test ride (never buy a bike without testing it out), try and get the engine and gearbox warmed up good and hot and see how it shifts.... if it's been abused a bit, the synchro's in the gearbox will make it really clunky when shifting.... it'll also get harder to find neutral once hot.
4. check out the clutch.... does it feel softer or stiffer than expected? Do you feel any pulling (intermittent or constant) when you have the clutch all the way in and the bike in gear? do you have to let the clutch all the way out before it starts to grab?

Were there soms major problems with the 2003? Could you be more specific?

The '03 at least needs the factory replacement belt. They changed the belt and pulleys in '04. The lights, the side stand need to be replaced with the factory improved replacements. Nothing wrong with the '03 but a stock unmolested one will need a few things to get it up to par. Make sure it shifts well and NEUTRAL IS EASY TO FIND.
