Shift Linkage screw came out on me today.

hey guys... on my way to work today I lost the screw connecting the shift lever to the link. It was a nice little surprise the bike had for me as I exited the Toll-Way. Fortunately I was in 5th gear, had a u-Turn and enter the parking lot at work left to get here so I wasn't left stranded on the side of the road.

Anyone know off hand what size/length/thread this screw is? The one that came out was the lower one but I'm pretty sure I remember using the old screw when I changed the lever and that the screws at both ends of the linkage were the same..

i can tell you when i get home if no one else does by then. i have two extra bolts for that at home that i can measure.

Yeah, both are the same. Take the top one out and any hardware store will have one.

ok... for those who care to know.... the screw that goes in here is a 3/16" - 24 X 3/4"

I will have extra's in my storage compartment from now on... (mainly just because I had to buy a package of 20 at the local Autozone!!! )

there is no such thing as a 3/16-24, its a 10-24.

I would be careful witht those bolts. They are not hardened or anything. They are actually pretty soft bolts. It's a good thing you got 20. I would go to the hardware store and get either a hex head bolt or a allen bolt in stainless. They will be a harder bolt and hold up a little better.

Yeah. I have no intentions of leaving this thing in there. I'll probably go get a carbon steel Allen head bolt from Lowe's to put in there. Kona is actually right. The proper name for this size is called 10-24x3/4. 3/16 is the actual diameter but not the common name. If they don't know the proper name for the bolt, I have no reason to believe they'd have any real quality in their manufacture.

Machine screws [pictured above] do actually come in 3/16"-24.

It's allen head bolts that go to #8 & #10 when you go below 1/4".

Yeah, be careful with that and carry an extra one in your pocket until you can get a replacement. I just pulled one out of my XT and it is marked as Grade 8.

My thread charts show 3/16" 24tpi as being Whitworth thread angle(60 deg) rather than the 10-24 UNC (55 deg) so you could turn this into a monumental discussion. [smirk]

All that aside, going to a stronger grade bolt is the way to go. I'll definitely be putting a drop of blue threadlocker on this when I put it back - I know several people who have lost these in flight.

Mine fell out today some where. I too was bound in 5th gear. I was able to use my heal to get into 4th.

I feel better knowing it's happened to Someone else!
Mines getting safety wired on tomorrow.

i guess i stand corrected. ive never seen 3/16-24 on a blueprint or in the machinist handbook for that matter but maybe i never looked in the right place, if they exist it would have to be in there. i hate machine screws. screwdriver heads are useless. i will go with a socket head button screw if i need a rounded head.

i just had mine break an hour ago, grant it its the 3rd time its happend, first two times it just rattled out this time it actually snapped, im going grade 8 this time and a nylon nut behind it with lock tight, dont care if it wont come off, this is the only problem ive ever had with my lightning after 20k miles
