I recently put down my Buell in a parking lot. it went down on its left side and crushed in the shifter and broke the primary luckily I am a welder and was a able to weld the crack. but when I reassembled, the shifter would shift down but would stay in the down position and had to be manually brought back to the middle, and to shift up you had to lift up shift then put back to middle its like there’s no spring in it. Any ideas where I might have messed something up???

well i already have the primary off no big deal i got pretty good at it. but i check and the springs are connected. what i have noticed is that the shift rod has a lot of play of up and down. is this normal i feel like it works now but is binding on the case when i put it on.

A "lot" of play is so subjective, it's hard to say without a measurement (1/8", 1/4", etc.) or seeing it.

Also, you probably bent your shifter when you went down, especially the surface area around the hole where the mounting bolt goes through it. Try mounting it all back up, tightening the mounting bolt - then back it back out 2 or 3 turns and see if your shifter works fine then. If so, you may need to flatten the mounting hole area on the shifter (careful it's cast) or use a longer body stripper bolt. Hope it's that simple anyway.

The stock shifter runs on plastic bushings around a steel grommet. If the plastic got mashed, it will have to be replaced. Also, the screw may be bent, and pinching the shifter itself. I'm north of Chicago (Lake Villa) every day. I don't know where in IL you are, but if you need help, let me know. I have a shop, and a lot of spare stuff.

thanks gunut75 that sounds like a possibility, but unfortunatley i live in champagin illinois. Are you a full time motorcycle mechanic?

Micah;
Yes, a bit of play is normal in the shifter shaft.

I had a similar experience when I dumped my bike and tried to retrofit an xb9 primary onto my Uly. The problem was that there wasn't enough clearance between the shifter shaft and the primary cover. (The cover was squeezing the shaft between the case and the cover. Easy way to test, put the primary cover on but don't tighten the bolts down all the way. If the shifter works properly you just need to add some clearance between the cover and case.

Do you have a 9 or a 12? If I remember right, the 12 has a bushing for the shifter shaft in the primary cover, the 9 doesn't. If yours has the bushing pull it out, file/grind some material off the flat face of the primary (where the flat part of the primary mates with the flat ring/shoulder of the shifter shaft), re-insert the bushing and try it again. Only take a small amount of material off at a time, as you don't want too much clearance in there. Rinse and repeat until the shifter works correctly.

Or the simple solution, buy a new primary. But that's no fun. ;)

Have you verified that the shift rod did not bend? If it is bent it would act the same way.

Try shifting it with the cover off. If it returns without the cover on the shaft is binding in the cover.

If it shifts fine without the cover but binds when the cover is on then one of 2 things has happened. You have either bent the shaft or distorted the cover enough from being cracked then welded. Im personally leaning towards the second one. There is a reason shops dont weld them.......If its not 1000% straight then you take a chance. I say replace them both with at least used parts if you need to save some cash.

i had to buy a new primary cover when i flip mine. when i put the cover on my shifter was binding up. all was good on the inside. the shift rod was bent alittle bit. i had to hone the hole where the shift rod goes into. do a little at a time. eventualy it will where in and wont be a problem. mine is work as it should now. it was a trick my friend/ harley mechaninc showed me. it will/ should work if the cover is good.

well i gave up and broke down and bought a new primer case. 260 bucks powder coated black which is the only reason i am a little happy. but it does work correctly now so it was the primer case after all thank you for all the help!
