I was tired of riding with my backpack on my back especially when it was heavy. So I rigged up a simple set of straps to hold it on the back seat.

I used:

Two nylon straps about 2.5 to 3 ft each
Two sets of parachute buckles adjustable each side

First I took the rear seat off and turned it over.

I removed the two front screws and centered the strap over the holes. Be sure to have equal length on each side. Then poke a hole through the strap where the screw needs to go though and tighten the screws down on the strap. Do the same with the rear strap using the aft most hole.

Then attach the buckles. Put both male ends on the same side so you can cross the straps if you need to. My backpack stays very secure at all speeds including highway. It sometimes would almost slip out between the straps in the middle so I tied the slack of one strap to the other strap so they could not spread apart.

Very simple and works great. The whole thing only cost my $8. I bought all the parts at Joan’s fabrics on sale. When you are not using it you can hide the straps under the seat and They are completely hidden.

Very well done, love the way the straps hide under the seat. Can you still use the plastic rear seat cover with this setup? Wayne

Sorry, obviously you don't want to stick a backpack on the seat cover. Question was meant to say, will the seat cover still fit while the straps are not in use. >>> BAD BAD STUPID Wayne :D

That's seriously cool! If I had a 'Bolt tail I'd definitely do that! I hate heavy backpacks.

You can do something similar for the lightening. I have to take my son to school every morning so I had to make a spare helmet holder. I could be doubled to hold down a pack.

It is using the nylon straps folded over with a bolt that was already in the sub frame run through them. As you can tell one side is just a cheap aluminum carabiner the other side are 2 one inch rings I picked up at Lowe's in the cabinet hardware section with the knobs. The 2 rings work just like the D rings on your helmet. You could probably put the rings on both sides for strapping down luggage. Then just run a length of nylon strapping from one side to the other.

Nice write up dude.

How did it feel visiting a Joann Fabrics? Did you friends punch your Man-Card?

:D

In all seriousness, You're a true McGuyver, and I aplaud you.

Midnight, I took my wife with me to joan's so I didnt feel so bad.

Racepro, When the straps are not in use you should be able to use a seat cover. Or are you talking about a Seat cowl. You should be able to make one out of that too.
