Be careful...it's addictive. About twelve years ago, a friend of mine talked me into jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. I learned two things that day. First, there's no such thing as a perfectly good airplane. And second, you can never again look up at the sky without wanting to be back there.
Needless to say, twelve years and a couple thousand jumps later, I'm not only still doing it, I'm also teaching others how to as well. Have a great time!!! Blue Skies!!!
I've never even been on a plane, so I could skip the first one, but that's definitely a good point. Ever since I stopped riding almost 4 years ago, all I would think of anytime time I was on a fun looking road, was what it would be like on a bike. Now that I've got a bike again I'd just got this giant list of roads stored in my head that I need to try to find again.
Aside from that, it's definitely something I'd be interested in doing. How much time and money do you have to spend training before someone will finally hand you a parachute and just let you jump? I feel like I'd get impatient.
Nice to see another jumper on here! Talked my parents into buying me a tandem for my 18th birthday...never quit, now 15 years later instructing others to do the same![up]
You'll have lots of fun, where are you planning on jumping?
id like to try it but idk i think it would be hard to do. a buddy of mine is getting into it. i think he has a little over a dozen jumps now. a few of my friends went to do it once and said it was amazing.
I jump off cliffs into lakes and rivers for fun [up]
a little hang gliding (not mine) [up]
DH mountainbiking is not too shabby either (British Columbia is the birthplace of downhill mountainbiking)
obviously riding a motorcycle is a rush!
It's as easy as...falling out of a plane! Ok, lame...it really isn't that hard though.
If you want to do a tandem jump you get about 15 minutes of instruction then go up with a highly experienced instructor attached to you. You get to experience freefall without having to worry about how or when to open the parachute or how to fly and land it. Tons of fun!
If you'd rather not have someone attached to you there is the option of AFF (accelerated freefall)...you get a 6-8 hour ground course then go up wearing a parachute yourself with two instructors holding on to you to assist if you have any problems. You have a few tasks on this type of jump so you don't get to just go out and enjoy the scenery, but it is also a hell of a good time!
Just call your local dropzone (they're in the yellowpages) and find out what they offer...it's worth it!
Getting in the door is by far the hardest part...one of the biggest misconceptions my students have that causes hesitation is that there is going to be a falling sensation, which there is not. It just feels like you're floating in a really windy and noisy environment. You don't get the falling sensation because you are already traveling forward at ~100mph, when you leave the plane you gradually change direction as gravity takes over. Know that as scared as you are going to and sitting in the door of the plane, all that fear will turn into exhilaration as soon as you exit!
I have always wanted to skydive and from there get into base jumping.
the cost is still too much for me but once I can spare the coin I'm doing it.
I have such a list of extreme sports I want to do but cant afford, the only way I will be able to try each before I am too old and arthritic to enjoy it all is win the lotto.
Im gona be jumping in nebraska were i live and they say 10000 feet is were we will exit and yea im afraid its gona turn into anothe expensive hobby which i dont need. and i wana do the static line jump after a bit
First time stepping onto the strut of an old ass Cessna was the hardest part, jumping out and free falling is one of the best things I've ever done. Wish it would last like 5 minuets before the shoot deployed
They are getting ready to break that highest free fall record. I was reading an article in either popular science or popular mechanics about the new suit. Its one of the redbull sponsored things
09crred1 - 10k will get you about 30 seconds of freefall and about 5 minutes of canopy ride. Static line is an older form of instruction but still used because it is less expensive. The learning curve is a lot slower but it is still a good way to learn how to jump!
ctmallam - We wear helmets to protect our head from getting kicked while doing formations, hitting our head on the plane while exiting, etc..
