speedo trouble

Used search but maybe not the way it should be done (
Anyway, a friend of mine got a strange issue on his XB. For no reasons speedometer stops working, then start to work normally again even without restart. While it is not working odometer also dies. Basically being a minor issue, but on the other side, he never knows how much fuel left, because the kilometers already riddent don't count. Pretty scary in long runs to stop without fuel somwhere. The bike is xb12, model year 2007. Any help appreciated.

Sounds like you either have a bad pickup sensor, or a loose connection.

The pickup is located right by/behind the drive pulley, take the pulley cover off and you should see it. Make sure the wires aren't rubbed through or cracked.
