speedometer needle bouncing around at steady speed

Two nights ago on the way home from work I glanced down and saw the speedo bouncing between 50 and 70. The next morning on the way to work it was fine. Then last night it was back to bouncing around all over the place, this time from about 55 to 80. I was holding a steady 70 the whole time.

Before I take this in for the HD dealership beatdown, does anyone have any ideas or experience with this? The bike is a '08 Uly if that makes a difference. Any help would be very much appreciated.

mines dropped like that a few times every once in a while, no idea why?.....it hasnt actually been slowing the bike down, just the spedo drops for a split second, and jumps back to normal

That's exactly what I'm seeing. Actual speed holding steady at about 70 (judging by the tach) with the speedo bouncing around all over the place.

Take your speed sensor out and clean it.

I had this problem at the end of last season and still the beginning of this season. First I tried cleaning it, but that didn't help. So I replaced the speed sensor and it went away.

mine doesnt do it a lot, but i've glanced down once in a while and caught it in the act, i'll try cleaning mine sometime!

for sure replace it! cleaning may solve the short term but it will happen again and again. happened to me as well, i tried cleaning it with the same results. replaced it and havent had the problem since

my 06 uly is doing this but with the bike turned off,
sometimes the speedo & tacho will reset just like if you turn the key on then off again (but not the dash lights) and it also resets the trip meters aswell (but not the odomater), iv checked all the wiring but cant find anything.
can anyone help or have any idea's ???

With the key off the speedo and tach will sweep randomly? Sounds like a "hot" short in your ignition switch to me, but I may be wrong

hi there, it also resets the clock back to 12.00.
thanks for the info you might be right all the wiring is clean, plugs are a tight fit and dry so it looks like it might be a new key/ignition.
