So my '03 XB9S has a K&N filter, and a straight pipe and as far as I know, a stock ECM that hasn't been tuned. I bought it this way and it runs pretty good, but I feel that it should have more balls than it does. So I suspected that it was running really lean. So I pulled the front plug to see how lean it has been running, but found a plug that looks not too bad.

What do you guys think? I'm not sure how many miles are on the plugs, but they are factory HD plugs and the hex on them is pretty rusty, so maybe factory?

Plugs appear to be in decent shape based on the tan colour. The rust you mention would indicate they could probably be replaced. The gap & electrode will give you a better indication of age.
I'd replace them, but if it's currently running ok, I doubt you are going to see any noticeable power gains by installing new plugs alone.

Can you post a picture of your exhaust?

sure can.. sorry it took so long.

I've got it rigged temporary. I was going to buy a muffler, but saw how much those suckers are. I guess I'll just go to an exhaust shop and have them bend me a piece of pipe and just bologna cut it and mount it. I will try to tune it make some power that way.. I know the muffler's back pressure is supposed to help, but I also like the way this sounds

^^ agreed, what is that? Like a flex tube? That looks basically like open headers! Crazy your bikes doing okay like that, bet it sounds loud! :D

Yeah, it's old shitty flex tube.. it works for now, but looks like shit. The gaskets aren't leaking, that is from my oil change and my oily hands all over her

I rode mine around with just the headers on to see how loud it was after I wrapped them and repacked my Jardine ..... That was two months ago .... I think my right ear is still ringing .... along with everybody on my street ...

how long it been like that? i know a guy who lost rear cylinder running similar setup

When I got it, it had a similar set up, but with a shitty glass pack on it. The flex pipe blew out so I had to shorten it and eliminate the glass pack. So exactly like that... about 3 weeks.

You're freaking me out, dude. Would running open pipes really kill a cylinder? I know there are a ton of Harleys that run straight pipes and seem ok, but I know this isn't exactly a Harley. What would kill it? Warped valves? Burnt valves?
