The Fan is a Welcome change to the AirCooled Engines from Other Motorcycles in Past years. Not Bother me a bit I let it do it's thing and I'm walking away to do my thing whatever that may be at the Time.I have mine Tuned to Run the Fan on Low speed while riding and of course by Temperature also.THE upgrades changes with the Ecm getting better also EPA regulations getting harder .
That Said the 2008 to 2010 have a better cooling for the leaner Engines for the Newer Bikes IT will come on at about 12/miles per hour and run till it (Vehicle)comes to a stop, then if the Engine Idles for some time it will come on the Low Speed first then Kick up to High Speed as needed this will COOL the Fuell in the Frame to some point. HARLEY Davidson could use that same Fan Program!
InStead their ECM cuts power to the Rear Cylinder early to pump air cutting off Fuel/ with a major loss of power till cooled down. The Buells will do the same on some models. Some Engines for the 2007 on back go ONLY by Temperature for the Engines cooling program.
Unless you Individually Tune the ECM for any Mods done to the bike.
The newer fan program with a STOCK ECM OR Race works better to keep an AirCooled Engine from literly blowing up the rear Cylinder and maybe some other areas along the way.
Check out the Add ons like the Right Side Scoop and Rear Header Heat Shield from American Sport Bike .com.You can also Wrap your headers for some extra Cooling if needed[Welcome]to the Forum. Check out the Mods Section and read up for a Better Knowledge of the Machine you have picked.A Fan is Cheap to Replace compared to Radiators'and Other cooling Componets on Say Like My Track RC51 OR just any Yamaha Cbr other bikes. Our Buells are Easy to fix and pretty Easy on the Wallet Compared to Many other Brands Models of Bikes. Ride Safe.*Jimi

Good info Jimi thanks. Mine is a 06 XB12ss. The fan has always come on when I parked it even after a short 30 min ride so it surprised me when it didn't this time after riding about 45 mins. I just changed the plugs with NGK's and did the full synthetic oil so I guess those are keeping it cooler than before.

Maybe my bike is weird but if I shut it off with the right hand switch,(fan running) but leave the key on, If I turn the right hand switch back on, my fan shuts off. Then I turn off the key and pull it. Fan stays off.
Normally I let it do its cool down thing, but there are times I want it to be off. 2008 xb12x;)
