Over a month ago, (about 34 days) I got the harness upgrade while having new tires mounted. I bought the bike used at 2258 miles (end of May) and she has 4675 miles now. Yesterday morning during my 52 mile commute I notice the voltage is running a tad low. It almost fails to start at a red light, volts were down in the low 12's. I get to work park it and think about calling HD. After work I get her started at 11.9v or so and make it 4 miles. During the 4 miles I am watching the Volts drop and realize that the battery is probably not charging even since the morning commute.

Bike dies at less than 9v, around 8.8 I think the cluster went so I had no idea and at this point I can feel the motor not liking this. Luckily I am in slow traffic and pull over onto a nice spot away from traffic area and call a buddy.

Last night I pulled the battery and looked at the harness upgrade wiring and thought about putting it back to stock and take my chances.

Or is it to late? Any thoughts on the Stator being shot or any other parts of the charging system? I have read dozens of Threads here and Badweb all with great discussions and very similar results.

Some other things to note since the harness upgrade. Random times she would shut off coasting to a light in neutral or while the clutch was in. Also would just die randomly at lights. I think I can hear the relay kicking over when coming to a stop in some cases, when I am bliping the throttle too.

Am I wasting my time going to HD and picking up a new battery? Its the stock battery, '09 1125CR and likely out of warranty. Feb-Mar was the build date serial 0990.

Thoughts?

mine did the exact same thing 2 weeks ago .i left the dealer and volts started dropping and yep died around 9volts. Dealer came and picked the bike up and they had to order stator ,fly wheel magneto, voltage regulator .I made them put in the voltage regulator and a new battery ,they tested good but since the bike stranded me on I75 the dealer accommodated me.Only nice thing was it was a warranty job!charging know at 14+ volts .

Whether or not the battery is dead you should still show above 13-14 volts when running, especially when above 4000 rpm. Your charging system has died. Call the dealer. The Battery is only there to start the bike, not to run it.

Tell me if my stator is going.
I'd say it's already gone...
Call the dealer hopefully it is still under warranty. 99% it's the stator- was on mine. If it's not under warranty, get yourself the '08 stator assembly and upgrade to the mofset r/r.

edit: This really sux that HD is not doing something about this obvious defect on the 1125. [mad]

Find out when the bike was bought not made for the warranty, you have 2 yrs after the purchase. Have a load test done on the battery first before looking at the stator. The stalling could be lots of things.Start with seeing if you have any codes on your IC. If a code shows up ,it will help with what switch or sensor went bad ,like clutch or neutral switch ,side stand sensor..just to name a few.Testing the stator- test the stator socket that is before your harness upgrade, between leads 1-2. 2-3.3-1 for resistance with an ohm meter set on the ohms scale. The resistance across the stator sockets should be 0.1-0.3 Ohms.If higher than that stator is damaged. If lower stator may have a short and needs replaced.I'm sure some one else will add to this, hope it helps out some.

^^^ agree with bossanova on HD

It does suck that the upgrade appears to be more of a band-aid then a true fix. I surmised through all the Threads I have read that the fix is only beneficial if the bike running at a constant speed. Genius though on some folks routing in oil lines for cooling.

If the 1190RS has a fix for this I wonder how long till we can order parts from it. Nearly the same motor layout, no? Although once again that bike is made to be ridden fast and hard, not at random stoplights in the heat.

I'll talk to Annaplois HD/Buell about 2008 charging components unless someone has a more elegant and true fix.

Battery tested out at 10.67v. Picked up a battery tender for now. The shop said they'll pick me and the bike up if I can't make the 52 miles. I had them look into ordering everything with heavy emphasis on 2008 parts. I am disconnecting the harness back to stock at the first start. We'll see in the AM how she turns over.

Unless you bought a Extended Warranty the 2years AND unlimited miles Starts at the first buyer. It keeps going untill it runs out. I ran into many Buells that the Warranty had already started. I just kept looking till I found one New Yes it took me almost 7months. OUCH!
You may, I hope [may] ,get the Dealer to cover the Stock Part but have to pay labor. That's a guess! I've been working on bikes for over 34years and many times if a part has been faulty AND theres been a Problem with many of the Same the Dealer will only charge labor.
Hope you get A good deal and the Dealer is Buell Friendly.Might want to remove the Battery and take it to an Auto Parts Store Have it load tested they usually don't charge to do that. Any time you have a Battery Problem Charge it up slowly first then have it Tested to see if the Battery Holds Up under a load.
Never Jump Start the Bike with a Vechicle Running just the cables on the battery hooked up to Bike, or Use a dual Battery System Like a Diesel to start the Bike Ect..,it can Fry the ECM or the wiring.
Sorry for your Trouble. Welcome to the Forum! We have all had to at ONE time or the other Replace those Parts on the Charging System.Ride Safe! *Jimi

Woke up to a nice steady green light on the tender. Reset the harness upgrade to stock according to the Youtube video Buell Charging System Un-Fix. Computer reported 11.9v, never got about 12v or so during warm-up. Took a 20 minute spin with speeds near 70mph trying to maintain 5k rpm. After returning home she showed 10.9v at idle. Shut her off in disgust.

Screw riding it to the shop, guess I'll just have them pick it up. FML.

For what its worth looking over my records the bike made 900 miles after I bought her and then got the recall done. So its been ~1500 miles since the recall.

2258 miles purchased used.
3177 recall done.
4680 miles stator failure.

If I had to buy again I would have looked at an XB12R or Ducati. This is UNSAT.

sounds like stator-----------------mine was doing the same thing just recently, 04 firebolt. i replaced the battery, starter relay, starter solenoid, and THEN finally after all of that it was the stator. and of course, i changed the voltage regulator at the same time
if you see a bad spot on it like this (mine a few weeks ago), you SIR, will be purchasing a new stator!! haha

and o ya, i forgot, GOOD LUCK FINDING ONE, i ordered from americansportbike.com, they said a few months to get one. i called local harley shop and they said only two left in the country sitting on a shelf, i said where? one in bumville, i don't even remember where, and the other in a way up in the mountains town in colorado (can't remember name either), called my friend said get your ass over there please. he did, purchased and overnighted it to me.........so i got lucky i guess.

Get a rewind forget original as same grief worth the money and the head f#@k.best investment [up]good luck

I decided to really pull the harness upgrade completely out in a little frustration today. Does this look like its all plugged back to original expect for this one lead that looks like it could lead to the ECM? Looked at pics in the Service manual regarding the solenoid which looks right. But the one hanging off there doesn't have a mate. I can't help tinkering with the bike. aarrgghhhhh... got an appointment for them to pick it up.

Being foolish and overjoyed upon learning I am still under warranty I decided to try and make it to Annapolis HD/Buell. After a good 2 day charging on the tender I made it halfway. I pulled over at 9.2v before I figured she would die on me at speed. The truck is on it's way while I type this. Display reported 11.9v at start up and stayed at 11.4-11.5 for awhile as I kept the speed up. But she started going down in volts eventually. Weather is so clear and just couldn't resist the impulse.

i too am going thru the 1125cr stator problem, had the upgrade harness put on and when it was in harley today to figure the prob even the upgrade harness ends r brownd from the regulator arcing out. the stator is also screwed. its bad enough that those of us that bought an 09cr before the blowout sale paid over double the price, now we all r faceing the caugh up 1100 dollars for the stator, couple hundred for the regulator and have to buy a wire harness that was put in the bike to solve the problem that we r all faceing now. dont get me wrong i love the bike but there should be some help from buell or hd on a serious problem.

Damn its been 10 days. Almost forgot what she feels like. Almost. Got her back this afternoon, cruised around as much as I could. Kept her up near and over 5k RPM during the ride home, some 52 miles. Hit triple digits at some key spots just to get the feeling back. Voltage hit up near 14.3v and generally hovered around 13.9-14.10v. Only hit a few stop lights, voltage settled to around 13.9 at idle and then down to 12.9 when the fans kick on. Damn its good to ride again...[up]to Annapolis HD.
