As the title says...she's being a brat. =/

I'll give you a lil background on her. The bike is a 2006 Buell XB9sx with under 12,500 miles. So far, I've managed to put 300. The bike was rebuilt with a firebolt front end and some race fairings. I won't lie, she looks pretty trick. I dig it. Buuuuutttttt, she's been tempremental ever since I got her. The day after I traded my GSXR for it, the CEL came on. I don't really know anything about the electrical aspect of Buells, so I took it to my good friend who is a Harley tech. They plugged it into the computer and it turned out the be the o2 sensor. Ok cool...no biggie. I figured I'd order a new one. My friend explained that I would only get a lil less mileage per tank due to the o2 sensor gone bad. So, I was on my merry way to order the part and then...BAM!! CEL came on again and started flashing. This was accompanied with loss of power. I can't be too sure, but it felt like the bike started to run on 1 cylinder only. The bike began to bog and sputtter. I had to pull over for a bit to let it cool down before I could ride back home. Strangeee...

Yesterday, I decided to take a short trip to go see my girlfriend outta town. 300 miles round trip. I took off in the morning. Bike started fine. I checked that all my electrical parts were working, checked tire pressure, and primary/engine oil. Everything looked good to go. I took off and after about 30 miles the CEL light came on. No loss of power. It didn't flicker. Figured it was the o2 sensor again. I would just roll off the throttle slightly and it would dissappear. "No worries" I thought to myself. So, I continued riding and after another 60 miles...BAM!! CEL flickers and bike sputters again...BADLY. Pulled over, let 'er cool down, and then on my merry way again. Didn't happen again and got to my girls' apartment safely. On my way back home, the same thing happened. Loss of power. CEL flicker. To make matters worse, after I was about 20 miles from home, I noticed that my headlights would dim and then go brighter. Weird. When I looked down at my dash, I noticed that my gauge cluster was dead and my tailight was dead, too. Only the headlights were working.

Today, I woke up and checked the bike. The fuel pump still primes and bike turns on but couldn't ride to work. So far, I've come to these observations:

1) Bike hates life below 2,500RPM
2) Bike hates life above 4,000RPM
3) Bike likes 60-65mph ONLY.
4) Seems like a cylinder cuts out after the bike is really hot. When it isn't that hot, the bike runs alright.

I'm thinking maybe it's all electrical? Possibly the wiring harness? I hate the fact that so soon into our new relationship, we're having problems. Booo :(

I LOVE Buells...I don't care what anyone says. But geez, I hope it doesn't get expensive. A new wiring harness sounds pricey. I really wanna keep this thing though...just scared of future problems with it. I had a '04 XB12R a few years ago. Thing liked to blow fuses, sputtered, and fried an ECM. It also kept breaking off the front header from the engine block. Bike had that repaired 5 different times. Decided to sell it after the last time it broke.

Jap bikes are fun. They don't seem to have that many problems. My gixxer only went through a r/r and that was about it. I would've kept it, but I coudn't resist another Buell.

Can anyone help me?

flashing CEL usually indicates a misfire. If you're seeing electrical stuff die, maybe your not getting spark to one of the cylinders due to a lack of electricity? Check the voltage regulator, could be that's kicked. One thing you might want to do it get it hot, let it sputter on one cylinder and check the plug wires with an ohm meter see if they're getting spark. might help you track down the issue.

Thanks!!
Yeah, I think ill do that. But if the voltage regulator failed, wouldn't that cause the fuel pump not to prime?

Personally id check the spark plug wires. I had the same issue but instead of heat it was water that made 1 cylinder limp along. Or maybe it could be a cracked coil.

Best of luck.

Check all your grounds also. Some pretty weird crap can happen if they are not making good contact. Have you checked your battery conections? you mentioned your bike starting its life as a XB9sx and it now has a R front fairing. this would indicate that the bike has been apart to some degree.

Very true. I think the wiring harness is the culprit. It looks like previous owner did a lot of half ass wiring. The wires coming from the right handlebars control housing are electical tape. Ignition is bypassed and bike starts with a switch. It was supposed to be a trackbike...

If there are spots in the wiring harness that look like crap I would start there and fix it properly with solder and heat shrink.

Yeah. I think ill try that. Gonna take her apart today and check it out. New harness is $300 AND on backorder. FML.

that sounds like what mine had been doing, but mine really screwed up when someone dropped it and I've been fixing everything. a wiring harness should be like 150 or so depending on if you want an s or an r and what year. I'd check your plug wires and coils to make sure nothing is loose and your wires are good first

I don't know how to solder though. Haha. Prob have my pops do that for me.

I really hope the wiring harness is the culprit. This Buell is too gorgeous to get rid of. I'll prob check the plug wires, too.

Thx bud! Gonna try later today. My friend said that.mechanically the bike is awesome. No.engine problems. So it SHOULD be all electrical.

I had a similar issue and it was my TPS sesor that was bad. Started up fine, idled fine but right around 3,500 - 4,000 RPM would start bucking like I wasn't getting enough fuel. Hook up ECM spy and check your TPS. Make sure you do a TPS reset first. then open your throttle all the way to see if the TPS reads the full range of the throttle from 5-7% open at idle and %100 percent open when your throttle isfully open. Mine was reading at 88% open at full open with a TPS reset. If it is a TPS sensor that has gone bad, go to Autozone and pickup a new sensor for $32 Part number is Duralast TPS213. Hope that helps!

agreed with freak2180...if soldering isn't an option, try butt splices and heat shrink, tag your wires and splice 'em one at a time, stagger the splices slightly, as this will keep the electrical clean and somewhat streamline, use zip ties to create stand offs(place zip tie around wires, don't zip 'em down all the way that the wires are touching, use another zip tie around your first one, but between the wires and then pull both of the zip ties 'til there are snug)...hence a stand off between two wires, harnesses or from frame work to eliminate chaffing
good luck with getting her back together..."ride it like you stole it":D

I didn't know that part number, but I actually just switched mine out because one of the clips that holds the plug broke, if that was my problem there I never would have known

Yeah, I'm gonna take the harness out today. The whole harness is crappy. Gonna take some real work to fix the electrical aspect of it.

If my speedo and such went out, could it be a fuse? Or as a result of the wiring?

probably worn, that's what I'm going over tonight, my gauges were cutting out when I'd turn a certain way so I knew it was a pinch somewhere

The gauge cluster could be a bad fuse connection. My bike had a issue with the cluster going out and it turned out to be the fuse was put in wrong....one side was in the conection and the other was between the plastic and conection.

You guys rock! Now I know what i should check tonight!!

I'll keep you all posted on it. Worse comes to worse I found a used harness from buellsterparts for $125
