Thats really similar to the modern AC compressor in todays cars (some of them actually have variable displacment) but the pistons move in a similar axial movement in them. Always thought it would make good engine!!!

john: have you ever seen a gnome or lerhome rotating motor? probably french designed. LOL talk about a ****-load of rotating mass....yikes.

Looks like a piston hydraulic pump.
