The 4-day work week, making the case

I'd love to work 4 10's. I work at a steel mill tho so I work a swing shift. 7 evenings 2 off, 6 days 1 off, 7 midnights, then 5 off for a long weekend. The long weekend is the only good thing about it.

I was on 4 10's when I lived in Oregon. It's pretty nice. I would do it here if I could. 3 day weekend every weekend is awesome.

Back when I used to work at a local casino there were a number of departments that did the 4/10's.
The different shifts all over lapped so they would have time to hand off what they were working on or had issues with etc.
And mostly everyone did like it for several reasons, but high up mgrs changed and that came to an end and no one was happy.
I always thought it was a good idea and it really got the different shifts to work together as they interacted.
But I guess it didn't look good on a spreadsheet somewhere so that was that.

They also staggered starting times for the major depts so we didn't have a huge influx of people all trying to run everyone else over to get to their area at the same time, I guess that has changed now too.
I guess when you get up to 12k employees you kinda lose touch as to whats really going on in your own building.
Which was one of the reasons I left.

I used to do 4 tens, it was great. Now I do the same as UlyLuigi, except we do 4 weeks like that on days, then switch to nights. They do, however, permit people to trade with someone on the opposite crew, so you can just stay on days or nights. I'm not sure which is better, I like the on two/off two part, but I don't like working every other weekend.

IMO, four tens are the best. i feel it allows you to have a much better quality of family life.

we have been trying to persuade our employer to do this for years. but, unfortunately i don't see it happening any time soon. [sad]

i think its great if you have a job where you don't deal with customers. i dont think customers would appreciate calling up on a friday to get a rush order in before the weekend to find no one from customer service or applications is in the office to put the order in. not to mention the fact we run 3 shifts m-f so we would lose a whole day of production in the shop.

but as far as im concerned im not needed in the office on friday.
