I feel like I know the answer already (AGATT), but if I was riding in the city, no more than 5 miles a day at low speeds (30-40 max), do I really need overpants? Will jeans truly not suffice? Any input from much more experienced riders than myself is very welcomed at this point.

Thanks!

I've been asking myself the same thing. Would be curios what people have to say about the kevlar jeans as a middle ground choice.

I dropped a bike once doing 10mph and murdered my knee in blue jeans. I am in your situation also. I ride less than 3 miles from work and I don't wear riding pants.

ever tripped and caught yourself with your hands and have that burning raw feeling on he palm of your hand? well imagine that x's 1000 even at 30mph road rash sucks. Check out the website below and decide for yourself.
Road Rash Queen

Thats what I figured, I guess I will just have some overpants I can take off before work. Do I need armor for it? Or is roadrash the main concern for these speeds.

it would be along the same lines as wearing proper footwear or not in that 3 mile commute, if your ok with your ankle being ground off then by all means wear your running shoes...

but all over your legs...

no need to get full racing leathers but getting into the habit of gearing up for even the shortest ride will pay off, safety first.

We don't gear up for the ride anyways, we gear up for the crash
;)

I hAve astar pants I always wear, I'd rather have them if ever the occasion arises. They r easy to store in a backpack with my jacket

Did a panic stop, went over the bars, was off work for six months with shoulder and knee damage. Physio said knees were the most damaged he had seen without being broken.

Adventure pants with CE armour works for me.

Also worked well at a 100 mph slide out but that's another story.

^ Sorry to hear about that fall.

Were you wearing your adventure pants with armor during the fall or just jeans?
